Zachary stood at the cave entrance and looked out. The sunlight was just right, the world blanketed in white. The untouched snow looked like thick whipped cream. He rubbed his hands together, unable to resist, and followed them outside.
The snow was deep. When the two little black panthers dove into it, only their backs were visible. The way they wriggled forward looked like they were doing a shallow swim through the snow.
Zachary bent down, scooped up a handful of snow, and packed it into a small snowball. “Jaden, Taylor.” Zachary bent down, scooped up a handful of snow, an
Two round, fluffy heads popped up from the snow. “Awoo…”
Kicking their little legs, Taylor and Jaden began making their way toward him.
Zachary smiled. “Let’s have a snowball fight.”
Jaden stood up on his hind legs while Taylor leaned his front paws against him, their stacked heads tilting slightly. “Woo?”
Zachary’s heart melted at the sight. He tossed the small snowball toward them. “Like this.”
The snow was soft, and the snowball was small-it scattered the moment it landed.
It was the first time the cubs had ever played like this. They rushed back inside, put on their clothes, then came back out and started copying Zachary, using their little hands to pack snowballs.
Soon, the three of them-one big, two small-were playing noisily outside the cave, their laughter carrying far into the distance.
When they got tired, Zachary taught them how to build a snowman. A big round body, a smaller head, red dates for eyes, stones for the mouth, and branches for arms. Taylor even gave it his hat to wear and planted a loud kiss on its face.
The two cubs squatted beside the snowman, nibbling on dried persimmons as they admired it over and over, completely delighted.
After the chief finished discussing hunting matters with Donald and the others, the therians began clearing snow around the tribe. During the cold season, snow came in waves with breaks in between, so the paths still had to be maintained, or it would be hard to get around.
Outside the cave, Jaden and Taylor were bent over, little bottoms sticking up as they worked hard to roll another large snowball. They thought the snowman looked too lonely and wanted to build it a companion.
Zachary placed several sweet potatoes around the outer edge of the fire and set up a stone pot, slowly simmering honey over low heat. In the cold air, once the amber syrup was poured out, it would quickly harden.
Taylor squatted nearby, staring eagerly, practically drooling. Even Jaden’s movements slowed as he kept glancing over.

Zachary smiled. “There’s something even better coming.”
Taylor’s eyes lit up. “Really?!”
“But you’ll have to help me.”
Earlier, Zachary had felt the cave was too bare, so he had built a simple table frame using interlocking wood, covering the surface with woven vines. Placed against the wall, it looked surprisingly nice.

The tribe’s snow-clearing mainly focused on the paths used daily. Starting from the center of the tribe, Matthew, Yael, and the others worked their way west-some digging with claws, some pushing with wooden boards, others sweeping with branches. Everyone had their own method.
The last stretch of the path happened to pass by Matthew’s cave. Yael’s sharp eyes caught sight of something bright red and glistening stuck in the snow near the entrance. As he worked, his legs unconsciously began drifting in that direction.
