Zachary gave a slow shake of his head, turned onto his side, and wrapped Jaden against his chest. His voice came out barely above a whisper. “Sweetie, I’m so sorry.”

He immediately pulled Zachary upright. “Zachary, wake up. Tell me what hurts. Is it your head?”

“I’m so tired…” Zachary muttered with a frown, covering his ears like he didn’t want to hear another word.

Matthew suddenly remembered the medicine the shaman had left behind.

Thinking Zachary must’ve gotten sick from yesterday’s cold, he quickly went to boil another batch.

“Zachary, come on. You need to take your medicine.”

Zachary touched his forehead and sighed dramatically when he felt the heat. “Seriously? Again?”

Matthew kissed his cheek gently, trying to comfort him. “Just drink it. You’ll feel better soon.”

Zachary wasn’t childish enough to refuse treatment on purpose. Seeing how worried Matthew looked, he pinched his nose shut and swallowed the medicine in one go.

Afterward, Matthew tucked him back under the blankets and told him to sleep.

Then Zachary suddenly remembered the traps and pits they’d prepared. “We were supposed to head out today,” he recalled weakly.

Matthew gave him a look. “That’s not happening. You’re sick.”

“Maybe I can just go for a little while…”

“No.” Matthew’s tone left no room for argument.

“Fine.”

Zachary knew Matthew was right, so he let it go.

Around noon, Matthew fed him another bowl of medicine. Once Zachary’s fever finally started dropping, Matthew packed up his things and left for outside work.

But the moment he was gone, Zachary started feeling miserable again.

Nothing hurt specifically, yet everything felt wrong.

The fever crept higher and higher until even the air leaving his lungs felt scorching hot. Zachary felt like a fish ripped from icy water and abandoned beneath the blazing desert sun, burning alive from every direction.

It was as if all the moisture inside his soul was being sucked dry.

Not long after, his vision blurred and darkness swallowed him whole.
