Chapter 180 Out for a Hunt
* Fanshed
The Black Panther Tribe sent out a prowl of their strongest therians. After all, they were planning to travel to other mountains to hunt and place some traps to try their luck.
Due to the freezing cold, even the beasts in the forest were also starving. As a result, the competition for resources was fiercer than before. Still, it was better to head out and try their luck rather than twiddle their thumbs in their territory.
Naturally, Matthew and Yael were part of the prowl. This time, Zachary would be joining them.
Zachary was less of a klutz now and was more proficient at being a lynx. His hunting skills had improved by leaps and bounds under Matthew and Jaden’s tutelage. However, his prey was limited to small critters like rabbits and marmots.
Bruce and the chief came to see them off when they were about to depart.
Donald, who was standing amongst his hunting party, turned to Bruce for a moment before quickly looking
away.
Bruce didn’t bring any attention to that.
It wasn’t until they left the tribe’s gates that Donald realized Bruce was tagging along.
He couldn’t help but ask why.
Bruce answered flatly, “Several therians have been suffering from fevers lately, so we’re running low on medicinal herbs.”
Donald hummed in acknowledgement before running to the front to lead the way.
A lynx thrived in snowy highlands, so Zachary’s speed was no slower than the black panthers. In fact, he was even more agile than them as he loped through the snow.
However, his silver–gray fur was so fluffy that he resembled a ball of fluff bouncing on the snowy land.
Matthew followed him closely, his eyes never leaving him for even a second.
The lynx was having a great time. When his fur got covered in snow, he would intentionally prance to Matthew’s side and shake himself vigorously. His tail
Ould swish in glee whenever the panther would end up squinting to avoid the snow.
Fortunately, Matthew was an indulgent mate, and he wasn’t upset by a bit of mischief. Instead, he would use his warm tongue to help lick the lynx’s face and neck.
There was scarcely any prey around the tribe now. So, the black panthers had to run for a full day just to get to their destination. It wasn’t until nightfall that they actually arrived.
Luckily, they had found a cave that could serve as a temporary shelter.
The therians shifted into human form and began gathering wood, finding stones to build a stove, and starting a fire to cook.

Zachary was exhausted by the time they got there. So, he found a dry, sheltered spot, curled into a circle. and buried his face in his belly. Soon, his eyelids began to droop.
They were surrounded by snow, so it was easy enough to collect some and boil them to drinkable water. Due to the chilly weather, the boiling water cooled down quickly enough.
Matthew used a shell container to scoop some up and knelt in front of the lynx. “Here, drink some.”
The lynx let out a soft meow before sitting up, and his pink tongue began to lap up the water.
Zachary was very focused whenever he was drinking water, taking care to curl his tongue to scoop the water into his mouth.
Matthew loved to watch him whenever he did that.
It was the same during dinner. Matthew sat cross–legged on the ground, reached out, and pulled the lynx into his lap. Then, he started tearing off pieces of meat to feed Zachary.
Zachary couldn’t help but feel somewhat embarrassed. So, he nudged Matthew with his head several times, telling the black panther therian that he could do it himself.
Alas, Matthew was insistent in his self–assigned quest to feed Zachary, completely determined to feed Zachary.
personally
Yael and the others were amused. They couldn’t help but think that Matthew might as well be raising a cub. Well, not really. Considering how attentive he was, he was being even more careful than therians who were actually raising cubs.
The look in his eyes basically screamed, “I’d feed you with my mouth if I could.”
Then again, they had always been a rather lovey–dovey pair, so this was normal.
Everyone shifted into their beast forms when they retired for the night. Although the wind was howling into the cave entrance, it wasn’t unbearable due to the fur covering their bodies.
Zachary became Matthew’s security blanket. If he wasn’t holding or cuddling him, the black panther would flick his tail in anxiety. He would only settle after wrapping all four of his legs around the lynx and burying his face in the other’s head to sleep.
Sometimes, he would even bury his face in the lynx’s
his mouth busy with… something.
Zachary was helpless, his tiny form unhelpful when it came to shoving the black panther away. He could
only wait for Matthew to fall asleep before carefully away.
Fortunately, Matthew managed to behave himself somewhat since they weren’t exactly alone, allowing Zachary to get a peaceful night’s sleep.
Meanwhile, Donald kept his distance from Bruce.
Bruce ignored him as well.
The atmosphere between the two was so weird and charged that even the dense Daniel noticed something was wrong.

Everyone woke up just as the sky was beginning to brighten, using the materials they’d brought back to the cave to sharpen their claws.
Zachary enthusiastically joined them.
Bruce came to gather medicinal herbs. He felt uneasy as several cubs and sub–therians in the tribe were suffering from fevers lately. So, he began to dig through the snow with his paws as soon as he woke up, sniffing around for herbs.
Since they couldn’t communicate in beast form, Matthew shifted into human form before they set out and warned Zachary, saying sternly, “Remember to stay by my side when we’re hunting later. Don’t run too far if you’re chasing prey.
“If you run into a wild beast, climb a tree immediately and yell for help.”
Matthew’s warnings just kept coming. He made sure to keep all his bases covered, but it all boiled down to one point–It was dangerous out there, so stay away from danger.
Finally, he asked, “Do you understand?”
The lynx nodded obediently.
Zachary wanted to participate, but he didn’t want to be a burden. So, he didn’t protest and followed Matthew’s instructions.
Donald and Henry found fresh animal droppings nearby. So, they followed the trail and eventually tracked it back to a canyon area to the west of the forest.
There were two peaks rising on both sides and huge boulders scattered around. Nonetheless, their focus was on the set of footprints in the thick snow that eventually disappeared near a nearly vertical rock wall.
Zachary looked up in confusion and saw several other scattered footprints on the sloping mountainside.
Could these tracks belong to boulder sheep?
The black panthers promptly fanned out. Matthew signaled for Zachary to follow him. Unfortunately, they didn’t see even a hide or hair of prey even after waiting all morning.
