Chapter 193 Guilty Confession

“This medicine carries a bit of poison,” Bruce said, stirring the pot as he warned him yet again. “You really can’t keep taking it. Sooner or later, it’ll hurt you.”

“And besides, wouldn’t it be good for Jaden to have a younger sibling?”

Matthew shook his head. “Mr. Bruce, you know my reason.”

Bruce let out a sigh. “To be honest, the chances of having a child are already very slim. You don’t have to be this careful. At the very least, stop drinking it so often.”

Matthew’s voice was low and steady. “It’s fine.”

Outside, Zachary’s chilled fingers tightened around the beast–hide. Without making a sound, he turned and stepped back into the rain.

The rain had grown much heavier. When he had arrived, it had only been falling lightly, but now it poured from the sky.

By the time Zachary returned home, the hems of his clothes and pants were soaked through. He brought over a wooden rack and spread his wet things near the fire to dry.

Then he went into the cave and moved every one of his belongings into the room next door. Even the table holding his pretty pearls and Moonlit Pearls was carried over.

After finishing that, Zachary picked up a piece of beast–hide and sat beside the fire, quietly continuing to sew Jaden’s clothes.

Having learned from his previous mistake, Matthew stayed outside for a long while. Only after the medicine smell had faded completely did he return to the cave.

The door creaked when he pushed it, but it did not open.

Matthew lowered his eyes. It had been barred from inside.

He knocked softly. “Zachary?”

For a long time, no one answered. Just as Matthew began to think Zachary had fallen asleep, the latch clicked, and the door opened.

Zachary stood there without any expression. He looked at Matthew for a couple of seconds, then turned back to the fire and continued sewing Jaden’s clothes without saying anything.

“What happened?” Even Matthew, dense as he sometimes was, could tell Zachary was upset. Forgetting his rain–damp clothes, he quickly followed him inside. “Did something go wrong?”

Zachary did not lift his head. “Change.”

Matthew’s chest tightened, but he obediently took off his wet outer robe and hung it on the rack.

“Who made you angry?” He moved closer and, out of habit, reached for Zachary’s hand, only to have it smacked away.

“Your pants.” Zachary looked at the damp fabric around his legs. His voice was calm, but it made Matthew feel deeply uneasy.

Matthew stood and headed toward the inner cave. The moment he pushed open the door, he froze completely.

Zachary’s clothes, shoes, shells, pretty stones, backpack, pillow… everything was gone.

Matthew turned back sharply. “Where are your things?”

“Next door.” Zachary said coldly. “From tonight onward, I’m sleeping with Jaden.”

“Why?”

“No reason.”

Matthew could only think of one explanation and immediately defended himself. “I’m not weak. If you don’t believe me, tonight I can-”

“That’s not what this is about,” Zachary cut him off. “I mean it. We’re sleeping separately from now on.”

“No.” Matthew immediately started toward the other cave.

Zachary’s expression chilled. “Don’t you dare move my things back.”

Matthew stopped mid–step, lost and confused. “Then tell me what happened.”

Zachary set down what he was holding, folded his arms, and looked at him coldly. “You should know what you did.”

“Me?” Matthew’s thoughts came to a halt.

Zachary gave a short huff and turned his face aside.

Matthew took a deep breath and began going through everything that had happened that day. He was certain Zachary could not have known about today’s matter, so his mind started searching through every other secret he had kept.

The cave stayed silent for so long that Zachary’s patience finally snapped, and he stood to leave.

Matthew grabbed him, and the confession slipped out before he could stop himself. “I shouldn’t have secretly carried you away at night to do those… things… and then told you the next morning that you were only sleepwalking.”

“But the first two times, you really did come looking for me.”

Zachary looked up at him, eyes wide in disbelief.

Matthew actually did that? So, his “upright gentleman” act had been fake all along!

Matthew’s heart started pounding when he saw Zachary’s expression. His grip tightened. “I’m sorry.”

“What else?” Zachary pressed, deliberately baiting him.

Matthew decided there was no point hiding anymore. “The medicine Mr. Bruce gave me does work. Every time you take it, you sleep very deeply.”

When Zachary thought about how guilty he had felt before, he almost laughed from anger. He thumped Matthew on the head several times. “You really fooled me good, didn’t you? What a performance!”

“I’m sorry.” Matthew leaned closer. “Hit me if you want. I won’t dodge.”

Zachary shoved him away. “Let go.”

“I’m sorry. I was wrong.” Matthew sounded completely sincere as he took Zachary’s hand and tried to make him hit him again.

“That’s not the main issue!”

“Hm?” Matthew still had his face pressed against Zachary’s hand and even took the chance to nuzzle it.

Zachary kept his expression cold. “I’m giving you one final chance. If you still won’t tell me the truth, I’ll go to the chief tomorrow and ask for another cave.”

That was practically the same as asking to separate.

Matthew panicked. Then his eyes caught the beast–hide hanging beside the door, and his heart dropped. “Did you… go out today?”

Still pretending, huh?

Zachary yanked his hand free and stormed into the cave, slamming the door shut behind him.

The very next second, Matthew took the door off its hinges. At least he still had enough sense to place it gently on the ground instead of breaking anything at home.
