Chapter 198 Winter Arrives
Recently, the cold had turned brutal. Every gust outside sounded like a ghost crying in the dark, slamming against the door again and again with a dull, rushing howl.
Zachary woke in the middle of the night because he was shivering too hard to sleep. He pushed himself up, teeth knocking, and glanced toward the firepit. The flames were still alive, so why did the cave feel like ice?
“What is it?” Matthew mumbled, still half–asleep, his arm hooked tightly around Zachary’s waist.
“I’m freezing.” Zachary rubbed his hands together and stared at the burning logs in disbelief. “Did the weather get
worse?”
The moment Matthew touched Zachary’s hand, all the sleep left him. He sat up immediately. “I’ll bring another blanket.”
Zachary caught his arm. “Just turn into your beast form and warm me. It’s too cold. You’ll freeze if you leave the blankets.”
When Matthew noticed Zachary trying to climb out anyway, he asked, “Where are you going?”
“To check on Jaden.” Zachary shivered as he pulled on a thick robe, then hurried toward the adjoining cave.
Matthew got up and followed him immediately.
Under the heavy beast–hide covers, the little black panther had curled himself into a tight ball, trembling faintly. His face was tucked against his belly, and even his tail had disappeared under him.
A pair of ice–blue eyes opened blearily. The little black panther stuck out his tongue and licked Zachary’s hand.
“Cold?” Zachary asked gently.
The little black panther nodded.
Zachary bent down and lifted him up. “Come sleep with us tonight.”
The little black panther rubbed against Zachary’s cheek, purring low and happily.
Matthew’s eyes moved to the cave entrance, where the beast–hide curtain kept shifting under the draft. He went over, dragged a heavy stone across the ground, and pressed it firmly behind the door.
The wind leaking through the cracks was already sharp enough to cut.
There was no need to open the door to know how brutal the storm outside had become.
Matthew added more wood to the fire until the flames rose high and hot. Then, he shifted into his beast form, leaving the warmest part of his belly open for his mate and cub.
Holding the little black panther, Zachary lay back against the huge black panther and buried himself under layers of hide. Only after some time did the numb cold in his hands and feet slowly fade.

Chapter 199 Winter Arrives
By morning, the world outside had been swallowed by snow. Thick flakes fell without pause, and the snow on the ground had already piled up to their calves.
This was the final plunge of the cold season.
After this storm, the temperature would fall to its harshest point, and the entire forest would sink into a dead, frozen quiet.
The cold made Zachary refuse to get out of bed. He curled himself under the covers and even buried his head. But once Matthew and Jaden rose, the warmth under the blankets quickly thinned, leaving him no choice but to get up too.
Matthew held Zachary’s clothes near the fire for a while, warming them before helping him put them on. Even after getting dressed, Zachary still felt chilled to the bone. Once he finished washing up, he sat by the fire and refused to move, as if he had been nailed to the mat. He did not even go over to eat.
Only after drinking a bowl of hot congee did he feel a little warmth return to his body. He leaned forward to look outside the cave, and a blast of snow struck his face like an icy mask.
“It’s too cold. Stay inside.” Matthew shut the door at once and let the thick beast–hide curtain fall back into place.
“How is the snow this heavy?” Zachary stared in disbelief. “Your winter… No, this cold season lasts way too long.”
Matthew pulled him back toward the fire. “I’m going out soon to check the traps and bring in the fish cages. You and Jaden stay here. Don’t go outside.”
Since heavy snow had sealed the mountains, hunting had become almost impossible. Apart from the rare wild chicken or rabbit, the tribe now depended mostly on fish cages and pit traps for meat.
Zachary nodded. “When will you be back?”
Matthew replied, “Before nightfall.”
“What do you want for dinner?”
“Fondue?”
“Okay.” Zachary walked him to the door, lifted his face, and kissed him. “Be careful.”
“I will.”
With the cold this severe, hardly anyone could be seen around the tribe except patrolling warriors and those forced to go out searching for supplies.

While Donald was waiting with the others, he suddenly spotted a familiar black panther. “Bruce? Why are you out in this weather?”
Bruce set down the beast–hide pouch he had been carrying in his mouth. “We’re almost out of medicinal

herbs.”
He had dug up a large amount during the last gathering trip, but the repeated fevers in the tribe had used up the final packet the day before.
The sub–therians and cubs especially could not wait. So Bruce had packed early, preparing to leave with the
group.
Bruce was a therian, but he spent most of his days inside the cave unless he was collecting herbs. His body was not as tough as the warriors‘. In such extreme cold, being outside too long could easily make him sick/
Donald’s brows drew together. “I’ll gather them for you.”
Bruce shook his head. “We need too many, and you won’t know which herbs to pick.”
Soon, Yael and the others arrived. The black panthers stepped into the deep snow and left the safety of the
tribe.
Trapped inside the cave, Zachary was so bored he nearly went mad. He dug out the cat teaser he had made earlier and decided to play with Jaden.
Jaden, still in his little black panther form, watched for a moment before understanding what Zachary wanted. He cooperated obediently, reaching out with his paws to bat at the feather shuttlecock tied to the string.
Zachary saw him chasing it and assumed he was having the best time, so he waved the toy even more enthusiastically.
Jaden saw Zachary smiling and thought his Sire was enjoying himself, so he chased it with even greater
seriousness.
Each thought they were amusing the other.
Somehow, that simple, repetitive game kept going for a surprisingly long time,
