After circling in the air a few times, the harpy eagle vanished into the snow.

Zachary held Taylor and Jaden in his arms, trembling all over. Even after a long while, his pounding heart still hadn’t calmed down.

This world was even more dangerous than he had imagined.

By the time Matthew came back, the sky had already gone dark. He knocked on the door for quite a while before Zachary’s guarded voice sounded from inside. “Who is it?”

“It’s me.”

The sound of stone scraping against the ground came from inside. Once the door opened, a warm figure rushed into his arms.

“You’re back…”

Matthew blocked the wind and snow with his back and quickly carried Zachary into the cave. After shutting the door again, he held Zachary by the shoulders and said gently, “I’m cold all over.”

A smell of blood lingered at Zachary’s nose. He suddenly lifted his face, his expression turning serious. “Are you hurt?”

“Just a small wound.” Matthew took off his outer robe, shook the snow from it, and hung it on the rack beside the fire.

Zachary frowned tightly. “Where are you hurt?”

“Did you put medicine on it?”

“I’m fine.” Matthew pulled Zachary into his arms and nuzzled the hollow of his neck affectionately. “Were

you scared?”

Zachary said, “Hm?”

“I heard from the chief.” Matthew rubbed the dark circles under Zachary’s eyes with his fingertips. “You didn’t sleep well last night?”

“I had nightmares all night.” Zachary hugged Matthew’s neck tightly, his voice muffled. “I was almost

scared to death.”

Matthew stroked down his back again and again. “There will be more people patrolling the tribe. Don’t be

scared.”

Zachary felt the smell of blood grow stronger and stronger. His heart tightened, and he sat up at once,

“Let me hold you for a while.” Matthew reached for Zachary’s hand, but when he saw Zachary’s expression, his movement suddenly paused.

“Don’t cry. It doesn’t hurt.” He was a little at a loss. He held Zachary and quickly said, “It’ll be fine in two days. I’m not lying to you. Therians heal very fast.”

“Don’t move!” Zachary wiped his eyes messily and held down Matthew’s hand. “I’m going to get the medicine.”

Matthew immediately sat up properly. “I won’t move. Don’t cry…”

Jaden rubbed his eyes and sat up on the bed, his voice thick with sleep. “Sire, is Alpha back?”

“What are you looking for?“.

“Yeah, it’s fine. Go back to sleep.” Zachary tucked the blanket around the cub. “Sleep.”

“Okay…” After the cub lay down, he soon closed his eyes/again.

When Zachary came out with the medicine, Matthew hadn’t changed his position at all. The moment he saw Zachary, he gave him an especially pleasing smile.

Zachary walked over. “Take off your clothes.”

Matthew immediately stripped off his top and reached for Zachary’s hand at the same time.

Zachary turned aside and avoided him. His cold fingers touched the edge of the red, swollen wound, and his expression looked very grim.

He carefully picked the beast fur stuck inside the wound out of it. After cleaning the wound thoroughly, he sprinkled medicinal powder over it.

Matthew stayed extremely calm the entire time, as if he couldn’t feel pain at all. He kept comforting Zachary. “It really doesn’t hurt.”

Zachary lowered his lashes and pressed his lips together. The face that usually carried a smile was now held very tense.

Matthew wanted to hug him.

Zachary held Matthew’s hand down and took two steps back. “I’m not done yet. Don’t move.”

Matthew suddenly regretted it. He felt as if he shouldn’t have done this. Food could always be found again, but Zachary was upset now.

The cave was extremely quiet. Zachary helped Matthew put his clothes back on and asked softly, “Are you hungry?”

“I’m not hungry.” Matthew stood up and thought about how he should apologize for what he had done

wrong.

“Eat a little. It’ll be ready soon.” Zachary set the turtle–shell pot over the fire in the stove, then poured in the soup that had been left in the stone basin.

The flickering flames caught the tear in his eyes.

Matthew’s heart felt as if it had been pricked by a bone needle, leaving a sharp, stinging ache.

He held Zachary’s hand and said softly, “I’m sorry, Zachary. I’m sorry, I—”

“You’ve already had a hard enough time. You don’t need to apologize. It’s not your fault.” Zachary forced the corners of his mouth up and gently patted the back of Matthew’s hand. “Get some proper rest. Don’t get up so early tomorrow.”

“Don’t cry. Don’t be upset…” Matthew cupped his face, his eyes full of guilt. “There won’t be a next time. Really. I promise.”

“I’m not crying.” Zachary turned his face away and didn’t look at Matthew. “Besides, you’re hurt. I can’t be happy about that.”

The soup in the pot soon heated up and began to bubble.

Zachary lowered his lashes and reached out to lift the lid. A rush of hot steam instantly scalded the back of his hand red.

The pain came late.

Matthew grabbed Zachary’s wrist at once. “Rinse it with cold water.”

Zachary stood there without moving. He stared at Matthew’s tightly furrowed brows and said nothing for a long time.

“Does it hurt?” Matthew’s heart ached badly, and his movements were extremely gentle.

“How could it not hurt…” Zachary’s gaze passed through Matthew’s collar and landed on the bite mark on his shoulder. He couldn’t quite describe what he felt, but it was painful either way.
