Chapter 218 The Blizzard That Wouldn’t Stop

The cooked snake meat had turned white, like a pot full of chicken necks. The meat at the edges had curled up, and the sharp little bones were very obvious.
Zachary kept his head down and gnawed on the steamed sweet potato in his hand without even lifting his eyes. Sweet potatoes smelled so good, sweet and soft. They were far better than snake meat.
Matthew and Jaden both looked at him.
Maybe their stares were too obvious, Zachary seemed to sense it and looked up. “What’s wrong?”
Matthew asked, “Aren’t you going to eat anything else?”
Zachary lowered his lashes. “I ate too much at noon, so I’m not that hungry.”
Matthew stared at him for a few seconds but said nothing.
Zachary hurried through the meal and left the table, then went to the stove to wash the pot.
Matthew stopped him. “I’ll do it.”
Now that the weather was cold and the water was icy, a thick layer of ice sometimes formed on the surface of the water jar in the morning. The water underneath was so cold it hurt down to the bones.
Matthew and Jaden almost never let Zachary touch it. Eyen at noon, they would make him leave the pots and bowls there until they came back to wash them.
Zachary wasn’t the kind of person who liked making himself suffer. Before this, he had always heated water to wash things. But now, with the blizzard going on, they were burning through firewood quickly. He wanted to save what he could and thought he could just endure it.

After Matthew caught him doing it a few times and gave him a stern scolding, Zachary had no choice bu to behave.
Matthew washed the pot and dishes, while Zachary crouched beside him. Sometimes, he would press against Matthew from behind or even lie directly on his back, resting his chin in the hollow of Matthew’s
hollow
shoulder.
When he felt playful, he would even use his fingers to tickle Matthew’s sensitive spots.
Every time, Matthew would turn back helplessly, his eyes full of affection, and say, “Don’t make trouble.”
Most of the time, Zachary knew when to stop. Once in a while, he would push his luck.
But today, he was very good. He quietly stayed with Matthew and spoke to him now and then.
Matthew kept his promise. The next day, he really didn’t go out. After sleeping in with Zachary, he finally got up slowly to make food.
He mixed eggs and flour with chopped wild onion and cooked them into omelets, then made a small pot of congee.

Then he set a stone slab over the fire, poured the snake meat onto it, flipped it back and forth to roast, and sprinkled seasoning overat.
Matthew started serving their food separately. He and Jaden were responsible for eating the snake meat at home, while the other food was left only for Zachary.
But he knew there wasn’t much food left besides snake meat. Zachary was already thin, and he needed meat even more to nourish his body. Because of that, Matthew still hadn’t given up on going out to hunt.
“Why did you stop eating?” Matthew asked when he saw Zachary put down his eating sticks after eating only half an omelet.
Zachary said, “I’m full.”
Matthew touched his forehead. “Are you feeling unwell?”
“No. I’m just not that hungry in the morning.”
At noon, Zachary reheated the leftover congee and the half omelet from breakfast. He had actually wanted to skip lunch, but that would have been far too obvious, and Matthew definitely wouldn’t have agreed.
At dinner, Zachary once again ate only half before saying he was full.
Matthew frowned and pushed the food back in front of him. “Eat a little more.”
“I’m really full.” After saying that, Zachary ran off to wash up, then quickly slipped under the blanket.
After Matthew got into bed, he pulled Zachary into his arms. His broad palm rested on Zachary’s flat stomach, and the look in his eyes was hard to read.
The blizzard showed no sign of stopping. The wild wind raged outside, and its howl sounded like mountain ghosts wailing. Just hearing it was enough to make someone’s heart tremble..
Zachary said, “Go out after the snow stops.”
Matthew said, “The snow won’t stop.”
“Then stay home.” Zachary turned over to face Matthew.
Matthew didn’t say anything.
Zachary knew that silence meant refusal.
He kissed Matthew on the mouth and asked again, unwilling to give up. “Please?”
Matthew said softly, “I’ll come back early.”
That sentence again!

The bright look in Zachary’s eyes instantly fell away. He turned around with a stiff face, pulled Jaden into his arms, and ignored Matthew.

Early morning.

The fire inside the cave had already burned out, leaving blackened pieces of wood scattered across the ground. The warmth from before they went to sleep had faded to only a little leftover heat, and even that was disappearing at a noticeable speed.
Matthew opened his eyes and carefully loosened his arm from around the person in his embrace. Then he lifted one corner of the blanket and got out of bed with extremely light movements.
He started the fire again and added a lot of firewood, stacking it into a tall tower. The flames quickly climbed upward through the hollow center.
Warmth slowly began to return.
Matthew had already stayed home for two days. Last night, he had seen Zachary secretly take a bite of roasted snake meat behind their backs, but the expression on Zachary’s face had truly not looked good.
Still, Matthew hadn’t exposed him. He had only watched in silence as Zachary slowly drank the warm water in his bowl.
Zachary didn’t eat much to begin with, but Matthew knew what he looked like when he was full.
He would be lazy all over, his eyes half–lidded, his flat stomach slightly rounded. He would lean against Matthew, gently rub his belly with one hand, and say he was so stuffed.
Matthew couldn’t tolerate letting his mate go hungry. So he decided to go look in the forest west of the tribe before Zachary woke. The mountains there were steep, with many caves. Maybe he would find something new.
When he opened the door, the raging blizzard rushed straight at him. Everything in sight was a murky gray. Wild snowflakes crashed into each other in the air. The cold instantly drilled into the cracks between his bones and began spreading through his whole body.
