Chapter 254 Little Quackers and Warm Candlelight
Apparently, collecting the eggs had not been enough for them.

The quacking beasts burst into chaos. They scattered across the river, wings beating wildly until sheets of water splashed into the air. A few flapped so hard they nearly lifted off the surface.
Yael rushed in from the left front, while Matthew circled behind and blocked their escape. The two black panthers cut through the water with open jaws and sharp teeth. Their tails lashed behind them, and their heavy paws broke through the river again and again.
Zachary and Quincy hurried to the riverbank. Neither of them looked away.
The hunt was completely one–sided. Even so, the quacking beasts did not go down quietly. Feathers burst everywhere, and in the confusion, both panthers received several wing slaps across the face.
It could not hurt them. It just looked deeply undignified.
After a while, the river finally quieted.
The quacking beasts had fled to a far corner of the water. They still cried nonstop, sounding as if they were scolding the hunters with every breath.
Yael and Matthew climbed onto the bank. Their black fur clung to their bodies, sleek and soaked, making them look like two oversized river seals. The only difference was that their heads were not quite smooth enough.
Yael dropped the two quacking beasts from his mouth onto the ground. Then he shook himself with terrifying force. Water flew in every direction, and the blur of his body was enough to make a person’s eyes ache.
Matthew did not shake himself or make any sound. He simply padded toward the place where they had left their things.
Zachary followed after him, puzzled. “Matthew, where are you going?”
Matthew gave no answer.
That only made Zachary, Quincy, and the others even more curious.
When they reached their baskets, the black panther lowered his head and pushed his muzzle into one of them. Then he opened his mouth.
Several pale yellow ducklings tumbled out at once.
The tiny things huddled together in a trembling pile. They were so frightened that they did not even dare to chirp.
Matthew finally had room to move his tongue again. He gave a low bark and licked the inside of his cheek.
Taylor immediately squatted by the basket. He gripped the rim with both hands and stretched his neck inside. “Baby quacking beasts!”

Jaden reached in and gently poked one with a finger. His expression had already turned thoughtful, as if he was planning where keep then once they returned home.
Zachary stared at Matthew in amazement. He had never known a panther’s mouth could hold that much. Matthew had carried five ducklings just now, yet his checks had barely looked swollen.
Zachary cupped Matthew’s face and rubbed it with both hands, unable to hide his grin. “You are incredible.”
Matthew leaned forward as if he wanted to nuzzle him. Then he seemed to remember that he was still dripping wet. He stopped himself, stepped away, and finally shook the water from his fur.
Yael came over with a piece of beast hide. “Change back. You will dry faster.”
Matthew trotted behind a tree at once.
Zachary went after him. “Wait. Let me wipe you down first.”
Behind the tree, Matthew lowered his body slightly and let Zachary rub the beast hide over him. Zachary wiped him from head to back, and Matthew looked far too satisfied for someone being dried like an animal.
By the river, Yael crouched down and cleaned the two quacking beasts with practiced ease. Before long, he held them by their long necks and hung them over a nearby branch.
Zachary opened his pack and retrieved the food he had prepared earlier that morning. Inside, there were smoked meat and spring bamboo shoot wraps, a bundle of wild blossom cakes, fresh wild onions, dipping sauce, and a small pouch of fruit.
The river shimmered in front of them. Above their heads, the sky stretched clear and blue. Around them were wild trees, fresh grass, and the soft scent of spring.
With good food in hand, the whole moment felt almost too comfortable.
After they finished eating, they searched through the riverside grass one more time. When they finally headed home, everyone carried something, and the last light of sunset followed them through the forest.
Halfway back, Zachary spotted several wild spicewood trees. The tender shoots at the top were at their best, perfect for picking and cooking. The branches were too slim to hold Matthew or Yael, so the job naturally went to the two cubs.
Taylor and Jaden shifted into beast form and climbed up the trees with quick, light movements. Their small claws cut through the young shoots, sending fresh green tips falling like rain.
By the time they returned to the cave, night had already covered the tribe.
The group that had gone out to trade for salt still had not returned. Zachary placed the quacking–beast eggs in the storage shed first, then carried the cilantro seedlings to the little garden.
Matthew crouched beside him with a bone knife and dug small holes in the soil. Zachary carefully placed each seedling, and Matthew covered the roots afterward. Then Matthew brought over a basin of water, and the two of them watered the new plants together.

The ducklings were placed with the chicks for the moment. So far, the two groups seemed peaceful enough.
The candles had only been made the day before, yet the entire tribe had already heard about them. The chief came over personally, and the shaman came along as well.
Bruce, however, clearly cared more about the cooking area than the candles. After cheerfully getting a meal from Zachary, he even left with a bag of dried plum snacks.
On his way back, Bruce ran into Leslie, who had come to deliver medicinal herbs. Bruce shared some of the snacks with him.
After walking a little farther, Bruce lifted his gaze and saw Donald waiting ahead.
The moment Bruce reached him, Donald took his hand and held it tightly.
Bruce did not pull away. He let Donald hold on while keeping his faint smile, still speaking calmly with Leslie.
Leslie forgot all about the herbs in his arms. He looked at Bruce, then at Donald. After a few seconds, understanding finally dawned, and his eyes widened. “Mr. Bruce, you and Donald…”
Bruce nodded, his smile growing a little deeper. “I healed his eyes.”
Donald looked at Bruce’s side profile. Even someone who had been alone for so many years could occasionally speak a line that sounded just right.
His voice was calm and heartfelt. “I was wrong before. Moving forward, I will listen to you.”
After the shock subsided, Leslie truly felt happy for Bruce. “Mr. Bruce, I hope you both stay blissful forever.”
Bruce lowered his chin slightly. “Thank you, Little rabbit.”
This time, Donald found that the nickname did not sound quite as irritating as before.
After spending the whole day outside, Zachary wanted a bath. He did not feel like walking up to the hot spring, so he heated water after dinner instead.
When he went to wash, Matthew grabbed the door and insisted on accompanying him.
Zachary had no choice. He turned around and heated another pot of water.
