Chapter 262 Treasures from the Sea

No one had expected the therfolk to send–Zachary such a generous stack of deep–sea cloth.

Matthew was clearly pleased. He even took it upon himself to tidy up the items scattered across the ground.

Zachary stood nearby, hugging the fabric to his chest like treasure while his mind was already full of clothing designs.

At the tribe center, traders sorted and divided the returning goods. Everyone gathered, talking and waiting. The cubs were especially excited, pushing to the front with their eyes fixed on the tropical fruits, which filled the air with a rich, sweet aroma.

The sweetness, combined with the salty aroma of dried fish and shellfish, gave the entire area the impression of a sea breeze blowing in from a sunny coastline. Under the gentle evening sunlight, it almost evoked images of golden sands, blue waters, and the warmth of a distant island.

Elias‘ belly had finally begun to show. Because of that, Kyle had become even more nervous than before. Every few steps, he reached out as if Elias might stumble at any moment.

Elias quietly pushed his hand away each time.

In front of so many people, he felt it was especially embarrassing.

Matthew had no intention of letting Zachary wear pearls or gemstones sent by that fish–smelling merman. So he began making his little moves. He shook the small beast–hide pouch filled with pearls and gems, his tone casual. “We already have plenty at home.”

He glanced toward the crowd. “We can give some away.”

As if the timing had been arranged, Elias, who had always liked shiny things, happened to walk over.

Zachary saw through Matthew’s little scheme at once, but he only smiled and let him have his way.

Additionally, Matthew had traded many beautiful pearls during their visit to the merfolk tribe.

After returning home, he also gave Zachary gemstones and emeralds whenever he found beautiful ones. They had nearly filled an entire basket by this point.

If giving these away made Matthew feel better, Zachary was fine with it. He had already planned to share some with Elias and Quincy.

As the weather warmed up, it was the perfect time to craft new necklaces and bracelets. When the sun shone on them, they would appear bright and sparkling.

When Elias saw Zachary, he immediately quickened his pace.

Kyle followed close behind with both hands half–raised. “Hey, slow down. Walk carefully.”

Quincy also arrived, and his expression softened as he gently brushed Elias‘ bangs aside. “There are loose stones on the path, so be careful with your steps.”

“Okay.” Elias always paid attention to Quincy. At last, he stopped obediently, allowing Kyle to breathe a sigh of relief.

Zachary opened the pouch, allowing Quincy and Elias to select their preferred pearls and gemstones. They quickly gathered in a small circle, heads bent close as they examined the sparkling pieces.

There were too many things to bring home is one trip, so Matthew shifted into beast form and made three trips back and forth. Zachary stayed behind because the storage shed needed to be rearranged before everything could fit.

Night slowly settled over the tribe.

Zachary carried several large green coconuts out of the cave and brought them to Matthew, who was chopping firewood nearby. Matthew took the coconuts and used stone axe to chip open the tops.

Jaden was still in beast form.

The small black panther padded closer, lowered his head, and sniffed one of the coconuts. Then he hooked it toward himself with one paw, pinned it beneath both front paws, and began tearing at the thick husk with his teeth.

His entire face clenched with strain, and even the tip of his tail went stiff.

After Matthew finished opening the coconuts, Zachary was about to go back inside to cook. Then he noticed the little black panther licking his teeth again and again. A moment later, Jaden even started gnawing on a piece of wood.

Zachary crouched beside him. “What is wrong?”

The little black panther let out a ‘Mrrr,‘ then opened his mouth and inspected his teeth with a paw.

Zachary cupped Jaden’s face and leaned in to check. A strand of coconut fiber was lodged near one of his canines. “Did something get caught in your teeth?”

The small black panther nodded.

Matthew heard that and walked over with a bone knife. “Open your mouth.”

The small black panther was stunned suddenly.

Zachary stared at Matthew. “You are planning to use a knife?”

“Yeah.” Matthew looked completely calm, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. He crouched and reached toward the cub’s mouth.

Zachary caught his arm at once. “Wait. I will get something safer.”

Luckily, he had kept the porcupine quills from before. For a black panther’s teeth, the size was just right.

Zachary worked slowly and carefully. The little black panther kept his round eyes fixed on his Sire the whole time. His soft tongue even gave the back of Zachary’s hand a tiny lick.

“Mrrr.” The little black panther immediately burrowed into Zachary’s arms and rubbed his furry head against Zachary’s cheek.

Candles were lit inside the cave.

Matthew and Jaden sat on beast–hide mats, lowering their heads as they scooped coconut meat from the shells. The pile on the plate beside them grew slowly.

Zachary picked a smaller, tender chicken, cut it into pieces, and soaked the pieces in cold water for roughly 30 minutes to remove the blood.

He poured the coconut water into a pot, then added strips of coconut meat, fresh water, wild ginger, and a handful of dried sweet berries.

Once the broth started boiling, he added the chicken and let it simmer gently over low heat. Before serving, he seasoned it lightly with salt and pepper.

The chicken broth was clear, subtly sweet, and aromatic with coconut. The meat was tender and flavorful.

Zachary also prepared a dipping sauce with chili peppers and tart green citrus. When the chicken was dipped into the sauce, the flavor became vibrant, fresh, and particularly appetizing.

Since they now had plenty of seafood, Zachary soaked a few large pieces of dried squid until they softened. Then he stir–fried them over high heat with onions, chili peppers, and minced garlic.

He then sliced some smoked meat and took out pickled spicewood shoots along with dried bamboo shoots from the jar.

He reheated the flatbread from yesterday, tore it open, filled it with meat and vegetables, and took a bite. It was simply satisfying.
