Yael had just brought over the eating sticks. After spending a moment showing off his cooking to Matthew. he headed straight back to the kitchen to play head chef.

Zachary shoved a big duck leg into Matthew’s mouth. You eat too.”

He was eating when something suddenly came to mind. Curious, he asked Matthew, What if a venomous snake therian’s mate isn’t venomous? If they kiss, what happens if they accidentally bite each other?

Matthew had never actually thought about that before. He considered it seriously for a moment and said. Their tribe’s shaman should have some kind of antidote.

Zachary pictured it for a second, like they’re midkiss and suddenly go limp from the poison. He couldny help but blurt out, That’s pretty scary.

After they finished eating, Zachary wanted to head over to the southeast side of the tribe to check on how the crops were doing.

Matthew said, I’ll go with you.

Zachary replied, You still haven’t finished your work here.

Matthew said, I’ll let them know.

Then we’ll g

go tomorrow. Together.” Zachary smiled. He knew Matthew was just worried, so he didn’t push it. I’ll

Cad home first and take a nap. We’ll have fish simmered in broth tonight.

Matthew leaned

and kissed him. Yeah. I’ll head back early.

At that

hour, there weren’t many therian around the tribe. Zachary walked slowly along the path, already thinking about making some fresh bamboo shoot and smoked meat soup for dinner.

Halfway there, he ran into Wesley. He pretended not to see Wesley and kept walking.

But

Wesley was acting completely out of character. He even smiled at Zachary, It gave him chills.

As Zachary got closer to the western side of the tribe, he sensed something was wrong. He broke into a run and shouted as he moved in the opposite direction.

A few fierce grey falcons dove in from above. One after another, they snapped out their claws and went straight for Zachary. Their speed was unreal.

Today the tribe was especially busy, and there were barely any idle therians around. Zachary shouted at the top of his lungs, hoping a patrol would hear him.

Then Wesley suddenly appeared right in front of him. He wore a wild, almost unhinged smile, twisted further by nerves. He moved fast, like he had been lying in wait nearby. He grabbed Zachary tightly and shoved him backward.

The grey falcons that had been chasing the subtherian immediately dove in to surround them. Their

formation was tight and coordinated, as if they had trained for this exact ambush over and over again.

Wesley’s sudden appearance was completely out of Zachary’s expectations. There was no time to deal with him. Zachary pushed himself up and kept running.

The grey falcons were now in a state of frenzy, closing in fast. They kept their wings low as they chased him down, their claws occasionally grazing his clothes and hair.

Just as Zachary was about to reach the edge of the dense forest surrounding the tribe, he suddenly stopped He turned around and stared straight at the aggressive grey falcons, as if waiting for something.

The next second, an arm grabbed his. A powerful force yanked him into a chest. It was Mathew, pulling him aside at full speed.

At the same moment, several heavy nets dropped from above and instantly trapped the incoming grey falcons. Black panthers hiding in the shadows leapt out and roared, tearing into the struggling falcons.

Vultures that had been perched in the surrounding trees also swooped down.

In an instant, screams erupted everywhere.

Are you okay?” Matthew looked down at Zachary in his arms, tense, and asked with concern, Did you get hurt anywhere?

Zachary’s heart was still pounding hard. He leaned against Matthew, breathing heavily. I’m fine.

Matthew suddenly grabbed Zachary’s wrist. His eyes fell on the bright red, bleeding scrapes along his forearm and elbow. His already cold gaze narrowed slightly. When he looked toward the figure scrambling away in the distance, the air around him grew even heavier.

I’m taking you to get that cleaned up first.

What about here?

They hadn’t walked

far when Matthew picked Zachary up and strode quickly toward the cave.

Zachary winced as his wounds were being cleaned.

Matthew’s brows were even more tightly furrowed than his. His expression stayed deeply serious, but his fingertips were as gentle as they could possibly be.

Zachary couldn’t help but suck in a breath. Dust had covered part of the scrapes before, but once they were cleaned, the full wound was revealed. It ran from his elbow all the way down to his wrist. It wasn’t deep but it looked pretty alarming.

Matthew’s voire was low and muted. Bear with it. It’ll be over soon.

Zachary reached out and rapped the center of his furrowed brow, trying to soothe him. It doesn’t hurt that

much.

Zachary sat facing him on his lap, arms lifted slightly, then slowly wrapped his arms around him. It really doesn’t hurt. They’re just scrapes. They’ll heal in two or three days.”

Matthew wrapped his arms around his waist and buried his face in the crook of his neck. “I’m sorry.

What are you apologizing for?Zachary lowered his head and kissed him. It was just an accident. And the plan worked, didn’t it?
