After washing the seeds clean, Zachary wrapped them up and soaked them in cold water. He kneaded them repeatedly, then left the mixture to settle and set. Once it had firmed up, it became a pale yellow ice jelly.
He melted the brown sugar blocks in a pot with water and let the mixture simmer until it thickened into a light syrup. After dicing some fruit, he folded into the ice jelly. The chilled dessert was sweet and refreshing, a welcome escape from the sweltering heat.
Matthew had taken Jaden out hunting. Zachary loaded the finished ice jelly onto the cart and closed the door behind him.
Everyone’s out working in the fields. I need to do something too.
By now, the little moo beast was well accustomed to pulling the cart. It lowered its head and slipped into the harness on its own. After adjusting the straps, Zachary gave Chonk a pat on the head.
“Let’s go.”
As the dense canopy overhead gradually thinned, the harsh sunlight poured down directly on them. The air rolled with waves of heat, making it difficult to breathe. Everything around them looked wilted and lifeless.
Despite the straw hat on his head, the heat had Zachary flushed and sweating. His shirt stuck to his back, damp with perspiration, and he kept pulling at the fabric whenever it became too uncomfortable.
The people resting beneath the trees spotted him and quickly gathered around.
“Zachary, what brings you here?”
“Hey, what’s on the cart?”
“Is it fruit tea?”
“Yeah, it’s fruit tea and ice jelly.” Zachary smiled as he opened the earthenware jar and the bowls.
Quincy stared at Zachary’s face with concern.
“Are you still feeling lightheaded?”
“Not anymore. I rested for a while and felt much better.”
Zachary filled a bowl with ice jelly and drizzled it with brown sugar syrup. He topped it with plenty of fruit before handing it to Quincy.
“Come on, take a breather.
“There’s fruit tea too. Drink some.”
Quincy took a bite and immediately felt a burst of coolness spread through him. The silky ice jelly paired. perfectly with the sweetness of the brown sugar and the fresh fruit. It was refreshing without being overly

sweet.
After a few bites, even the oppressive summer heat felt far less unbearable.
Everyone sat wherever they could find space. They gulped down cups of fruit tea first, then eagerly dug into the ice jelly.
“This is delicious!”
“It’s so clear and shiny. It looks beautiful.”
“It’s sweet and refreshing. My stomach feels cool now.”
After eating and drinking their fill, everyone regained their energy. They pulled their straw hats back on, grabbed their bone knives, and returned to the fields. Cart after cart of harvested crops was transported toward the center of the tribe as more orange and red colors spread across the horizon.
By the time Zachary headed home with Chonk, both of them were exhausted.
They collapsed onto the ground the moment they arrived and lay there for quite a while before finding the strength to get up again.
Thankfully, a stream ran near the cave, and bamboo tubes carried water from it. Zachary bathed the little moo beast first, then went around refilling the water for the chickens, ducks, and rabbits. Once all the animals had been taken care of, he carried some water into the bathroom.
By the time he emerged from the bathroom, the sun had set. Dusk painted the sky a muted gray blue, and a faint breeze fted through the air. Even so, the lingering warmth of the day had yet to fade.
Zachary stretched out in the hammock and intended to rest his eyes for a while.
When he opened them again, Matthew was standing beside him.
He had apparently just finished bathing. Droplets of water still clung to his bare chest, while damp strands of hair hung over his forehead.
Zachary sat up and wrapped his arms around Matthew’s waist. He leaned forward and rested his cheek against Matthew’s cool chest, savoring the relief from the heat. After rubbing against him for a moment, he let out a contented sigh.
Matthew lowered his head and ran a hand through Zachary’s hair.
“I heard you weren’t feeling well this morning.”
Zachary looked utterly relaxed as he leaned against him.
“It was just the heat. I got a little lightheaded after being out in the sun.”
Matthew’s hand slid down and rested against his mate’s cheek. His thumb gently brushed over the skin.
“Have you seen the shaman about it?”
“I’m fine now.” Zachary suddenly asked, “Where’s Jaden? Why didn’t he come back with you?”

Matthew lifted Zachary securely into his arms.
“He’s with Yael. Quincy asked us to come over for dinner.”
Zachary had no desire to move. He wrapped his arms around Matthew’s neck and clung to him like a koala, letting himself be carried into the cave.
After changing their clothes and bringing along the leftover ice jelly, the two headed out. The little moo beast seemed to think they were going somewhere fun and happily trotted after them.
Taylor and Jaden were squatting by a stone basin, playing with several young quacking beasts. Chonk wandered over and stuck his head into the group. The little creatures were so startled that they began flapping wildly.
“Chonk, those aren’t snacks.”
“Moo-”
Chonk gave a soft cry before lowering its head toward the basin to drink.
Taylor immediately reached out to stop him. Jaden, on the other hand, had plenty of experience dealing with Chonk. He grabbed the little moo beast by the snout and held its mouth closed.
When he saw Zachary and Matthew arrive, Taylor immediately brightened.
He hurried to
fetch stools and pour water.
“Alphas we’re having barbecue tonight!”
Yael was setting up a stove outside the cave. When he noticed Zachary arrive, he nodded toward the freshly butchered moo beast nearby.
“Just slaughtered it. The meat’s as tender as it gets.”
Zachary set out several bowls of brown sugar ice jelly and called everyone over to try some.
Yael abandoned what he was doing and headed over immediately. He reached the bowls before either of the kids had a chance.
Over time, Yael’s cooking had improved by leaps and bounds. Even Zachary had to admit that the sauces he came up with were excellent. As for grilling, he had become so skilled that turning skewers over the fire seemed almost effortless.
Next to him, Matthew looked less like an assistant and more like a complete beginner.
In fact, he gave off the impression of someone who had only gotten the job through connections and was still in his first few days of training.
Since they were having barbecue, Yael had even brought out a fresh jar of drunken fruit juice. As soon as he sat down, he poured Zachary a full cup.
