Zachary tied a thin string around each persimmon stem, linking them into a long chain. He hung them in a wellventilated area and let them dry naturally for a while.

That’s it?Quincy asked.

Let them hang for a few days. Then give them a gentle squeeze. After that, we pack them into a jar. One layer of saucecoated peels, one layer of dried fruit. Stack them up, seal it tight, and let it sit for about half month.

That long?Quincy frowned, clearly impatient. The idea of those preserved fruit cakes already had his mouth watering.

Good food takes time,Zachary said with a smile. He headed back into the storage room, pulling out the mushrooms they had gathered the night before and laying them out to dry again. Once they were fully dehydrated, they would last the entire winter without a problem.

Not far off in the forest, several black panthers lounged across tree branches. They looked relaxed, but their eyes stayed locked on the ground below.

A group of roundheaded cubs darted through the grass. Some were so small they barely reached above it, only a strip of black fur visible along their backs.

Hunting had not yet become a matter of survival for them. Right now,

Sometimes, as they moved along, one cub would suddenly bite onto the tail of the one in front.

At this hour, plenty of animals were out searching for food. Rabbits, squirrels, pheasants, birds, rodents. All of them were fair targets for the young cubs.

Now and then, they got bold and tried their luck with antelope, deer, and even wild boars. Most of the time, it did not end well. If things turned dangerous, the adults had to step in and pull them out.

Hidden the tall grass, Jaden lowered his body. His belly brushed the ground as he crept forward,

en in paws moving in slow, measured steps. His icy blue eyes locked onto the slight movement ahead.

in the grass, ears drooping as it nibbled quickly on tender roots. It had no idea was closing in.

Jaden held his breath. The moment he got within striking distance, his hind legs kicked hard against the ground. He lunged.

His claws pinned the rabbit down. A split second later, his jaws clamped tight around its throat.

The rabbit struggled wildly, even dragging him into a roll across the ground, but Jaden never let narrowed pupils were sharp and cold, filled with nothing but intent to kill.

Yael found himself thinking back to when he and Matthew used to learn how to hunt together as cubs. He’s fast, precise, and ruthless. Just like you used to be.

Blood soaked into Jaden’s fur as the prey finally went still.

He flicked his tail, picked up the rabbit, and started walking back, one step at a time.

Ethan glanced around. Hey, where’d Taylor and the others go?

Before he could finish, rustling burst from the grass. The next second, three cubs came sprinting out, bodies low, panic written all over them. Urgent yelps spilled from their mouths.

Right behind them, a porcupine charged forward, bristling with sharp quills. It barreled after them, shaking its body as it ran and sending blackandwhite spikes flying.

Caesar had already taken a hit to the backside. He yelped in pain, legs scrambling so fast they almost blurred.

Oh crap!Yael and the others leaped down from the trees. How did they piss that thing off?

Porcupine meat might taste good, but one wrong move and they end up full of quills. No one hunted them unless they absolutely had to.

Taylor was at the back, seconds away from getting caught. Just then, Jaden crossed paths with him. Without hesitation, he dropped the rabbit and slammed into Taylor, knocking him out of the way.

The porcupine did not slow down. It kept charging after Caesar and Logan.

Yael and Matthew pushed forward despite the incoming quills, trying to block it.

Kyle and Daniel rushed in, grabbed Caesar and Logan, and hauled them up onto a nearby tree.

Yael let out a sharp, vicious snarl, baring his fangs. He looked downright feral.

That porcupine either lost its mind or got seriously pissed. Every single quill shot up, and it was dead set on dragging this into a killorbekilled fight.

Matthew moved fast, weaving around the

attacks while trying to get at its softer flank.

The porcupine instantly pivoted, swinging its back toward him and aiming those long quills right at his

face.

The fight hit a deadlock.

Yael ran out of patience. He let out a low, rumbling growl. “Just go in already.

Matthew took two steps back, gesturing for him to take the lead.

mouth turned into a pincushion. Zachary seems pretty into and I would hate to ruin it.

Yael went speechless.

Right then, Kyle and Daniel showed up to help.

Four black panthers closed in, boxing the porcupine in. The thing went completely feral, spinning wildly in place. No one could find an opening.

They still caught a few quills. Pride kept them quiet. Not one of them made a sound as they bit the barbs out of each other.

In the end, the porcupine spun itself dizzy.

Matthew seized the moment. He lunged in, knocked it flat with one strike, and clamped down on its neck

The porcupine thrashed in its final moments, quills driving forward. He shielded his face, pinning it down with his forepaws.

Then came something that felt like a stabbing massage.

A black panther’s hide was thick enough. As long as it wasn’t the face or anything vital, it wasn’t a big deal. It still hurts like hell.

Matthew held it together. He made no sound as he finished off the porcupine.

You idiots really went after a longspined beast?Yael snapped, glaring at the cubs standing there with their heads down, looking pitiful. What, you think you are too goodlooking or something?
