Chapter 101
Checking In
Aurora’s POV
I wake up to soft sunlight filtering through the curtains, warm and gold. For a moment, I don’t move. My whole body aches–dull throbs in some places, sharp jabs in others. And then it all rushes. back–my injuries, the nightmare, the pain.
I blink up at the ceiling, breathing slow and steady like Raphael taught me.
The door creaks.
I jump just a little–expecting one of the maids or maybe Raphael with another round of meds.
But it’s neither of them.
It’s Jace.
And he’s carrying a tray.He balances it like he’s sneaking into enemy territory, tongue poking out in concentration, almost knocking it against the doorframe twice. There’s a full spread on it- pancakes, eggs, fruit, a little cup of orange juice with the tiniest umbrella stuck inside it for some
reason.
I blink at him. “Um…”
He stops dramatically at the foot of the bed, puffing his chest out. “Aurora. Your favorite idiot has
arrived.
“1
“You know how hard it is to sneak past Andrei?” he mutters. “He interrogated me like I was smuggling weapons.
“Maybe you looked suspicious.
“I put in hesitantly.
“I always look suspicious. That’s my aesthetic.
“He says it so seriously I giggle again, quieter this ime. Jace gives me a proud little eyebrow raise. He shakes his head. “But just know, nothing that happened is your fault. Never was. Just know you don’t have to handle it alone anymore, okay? You didn’t choose this, and you’re not alone anymore. We’re here.
“We don’t say anything else for a while. He lets me eat in peace, stealing my strawberries one by one while pretending it’s part of his ‘tax‘ as a delivery boy.
“Now eat up,” he says, nudging a little pancake toward me. “Then you can tell me what dumb show I have to watch with you today.”
