Chapter 156

Angels in Heaven

Aurora’s POV

The air smells like rain and wildflowers, and the light… the light is gold.

Soft, endless gold spilling across an ocean of tall grass that sways around me, whispering against my skin.

I blink slowly, breathing in, confusion curling through my chest.

My clothes are clean. My body doesn’t hurt. The wind hums a song I’ve heard before.

“H–Hello?” My voice sounds small here. Like it doesn’t belong. No answer.

The sun hangs low in the sky, painting everything in amber. I push through the grass, each blade

brushing against my fingertips. Everything glows–warm, alive, too beautiful to be real.

And then I see her.

A figure standing ahead, back turned, hair dark and soft, swaying with the wind.Something inside

me cracks open.

“Mamá?“The word leaves my lips before I can stop it.

It feels like breathing after drowning.

The woman stills-

then slowly, she turns. Her eyes meet mine.

Brown, warm, gentle. So full of something I haven’t seen in them for so long-

love.

For a heartbeat, I forget to breathe.

The wind rushes between us, lifting strands of my hair, carrying her scent–the faintest trace of

roses and rain. Her lips curve into a smile that breaks me completely.

“Il mio piccolo angelo,” she whispers. (My little angel.)Her arms open.

And I run.

I run like the world is ending again, like if I stop, I’lose her forever. My legs burn. Tears blur my vision, spilling down my face as I push through the golden grass, faster, faster–until she’s right

there.

And when I reach her, I crash into her arms.Warm.

The moment her hands cradle the back of my head, all the pain I’ve buried–the fear, the guilt, the screams—come pouring out. I clutch her tighter, sobbing into her chest, my words breaking apart

between gasps.

“Mamá–1- I’m sorry-

I–I’m

“No, amore mio… shh.

Her voice trembles as her fingers slide through my hair, gentle, trembling, desperate. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

“(my love)Her words break, soft and shaking against my ear. “For everything I did. For everything I didn’t do. For not holding you when you needed me to. For letting you grow up so scared.

“Her shoulders shake as she presses her lips to my hair, her tears falling. “You didn’t deserve it, mio piccolo angelo. None of it. I was so weak. I hurt you. I hurt you so much.

“(my little angel)I shake my head against her, choking out a sob. “No, mamá-“But she only hushes me again, her hand cupping my cheek, thumb brushing away my tears even as her own fall.

“You were my light, Aurora. Always. I just couldn’t see through the dark.

“The wind swells around us, carrying the scent of rain and roses, wrapping us in gold.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers again, voice breaking completely. “Mi dispiace, il mio piccolo angelo.

Chapter 156 1

“She smiles, eyes fixed on the sky. “Because of the light. Because even after the darkest night, the sky finds a way to shine again. That’s what you were to me—the promise that no matter how much darkness I’d seen, something gentle could still be born from it.
