Madeline’s car rolled to a stop in front of the Grayson house. She stepped out, took a steadying breath, and marched toward the door. She already knew what waited for her inside, but that didn’t slow her down for a second.
The housekeeper at the entrance just stared at her, mouth hanging open. “Mrs… Mrs. Grayson?”
She had worked here forever, since Madeline was still the lady of the house. Of course she recognized her.
“Mrs. Grayson, but… you’re not—” Dead? The words caught in her throat. How could she be standing here, alive and well?
Madeline’s voice came out cold and even. “Julian and I are divorced. No need to call me that. Where is he?”
“He just got back. He’s in the study.” The housekeeper’s hands trembled a little.
Madeline didn’t pause. She pushed past her and headed inside.
“Ms… Ms. Monroe, you can’t just—” The housekeeper tried to protest, but when she saw the fierce look in Madeline’s eyes, she stopped herself.
Madeline climbed the stairs, every step fueled by anger. She knew every inch of this place, every room, every turn. She went straight to Julian’s study without hesitation.
Her heart pounded with rage. She could handle anything else, but when it came to Oliver, nothing else mattered. She would never let Julian take him away.
She flung open the study door. “Julian, you bastard, give him back to me.”
All the anger she’d been holding in finally exploded.
Julian looked up from his laptop, eyebrows knitting together when he saw her standing there. “Madeline, you’ve got some nerve. I wasn’t even looking for you, yet here you are.”
She met his gaze, her eyes blazing. “This is between us. Why are you messing with a child?”
Julian narrowed his eyes. “What are you talking about?”
If he hadn’t raised Noah these past five years, she wouldn’t even have the right to stand here demanding anything.
She’d walked away. He was the one who stayed and cared for Noah. Was it really wrong for him to keep the child now?
“Fine, Julian. I know I can’t win against you. But I’ve already called the police. If you don’t give him back, I’ll see you in court.”
Madeline’s voice was steady, her resolve unshakable. There was no way she was backing down.
Julian’s eyes grew colder. She actually called the police? She was willing to fight him in court?
He moved closer. Madeline tried to push him away, but his hand clamped around her wrist, unbreakable.
She barely had time to react before he spun her around and pinned her against the desk. Her blouse slipped open, revealing the elegant curve of her neck and her delicate collarbones.
