Madeline’s cheeks burned the second Brenda mentioned Julian’s name. She fumbled with her phone, trying to turn the volume down, but somehow managed to crank it all the way up instead.

The sound echoed through the room. Julian’s gaze was instantly on her, heavy and sharp. Madeline wanted to sink right through the floor.

Brenda, of course, was still talking. She never seemed to care what she said. “Hello? Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t tell me Julian’s right next to you.”

Madeline covered her face, groaning. “Congrats, you nailed it.”

Brenda sucked in a breath. Then the call went dead.

Madeline let out a long sigh, embarrassed beyond words.

Julian, who had been scrolling through his own phone, looked over at her. His eyes narrowed. “Drag you into bed?”

Madeline nearly choked. “Uh… Brenda just likes to joke around. Don’t mind her.”

He shrugged. “Doesn’t bother me.”

She forced a smile and quickly tried to steer the conversation somewhere safer. “Anyway, I should pay you back for the hospital stay and breakfast. How much do I owe you?”

“It’s okay,” Julian replied, already glancing back at his screen.

A moment later, his phone buzzed. Ten thousand just landed in his account.

Julian’s jaw tightened. She really didn’t waste any time.

Madeline figured a private hospital room like this must cost a fortune, and the breakfast he’d brought her was from one of the most famous spots in the city. She knew it wouldn’t have come cheap, either. Since he wouldn’t give her a number, she sent him ten thousand. It had to be enough.

Julian looked at her, his expression unreadable. “You know, you’re still my wife. Legally. You don’t have to keep everything so separate.”

Madeline set her phone down. “I just think it’s better this way.”

Hearing him mention “wife” again made something twist inside her. After a pause, she said, “Julian, we should probably go get the divorce sorted out soon.”

This marriage had been hanging over her for too long.
