“I’m busy right now. We’ll talk when I have time. There’s work waiting for me at the office. You should stay here and rest.”
Madeline barely had the chance to say anything else before Julian walked out, leaving her alone and more than a little confused.
Was he angry just now? Did he actually not want a divorce?
The thought barely had a chance to take root before Madeline brushed it aside. This was the same man who’d once thrown the divorce papers in her face, the same man getting engaged to Helene. There was no way he wanted to stay married.
Lately, her mind had been running wild with nonsense.
Now, the room was completely quiet. Madeline figured she’d finally get a peaceful morning to herself.
She was wrong. It wasn’t long before someone barged in without even bothering to knock.
Her mood took a nosedive when she saw who it was.
Courtney was leading the way, followed by Helene, and Lucy, who sat in a wheelchair being pushed by a maid.
Courtney strode into the room like she was busting someone in the middle of an affair, her eyes darting everywhere as she circled the room, bold as anything.
Not finding whoever she was looking for, Courtney let out a cold snort, then zeroed in on Madeline. Madeline frowned, put down her phone, and stared back at the three of them, her expression ice-cold.
Helene looked around for Julian, and when she didn’t spot him, she let out a small but obvious sigh of relief.
Her gaze slid over to Madeline, and Madeline caught the flash of hatred in her eyes.
Madeline’s lips curled in a faint, mocking smile.
Perfect. She hadn’t even had to go looking for Helene after what happened last night. Now Helene had come right to her door.
That stung. Helene and Courtney both looked furious, and Helene’s face lost all its color.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Julian and I are getting engaged. You’re the one who can’t let go, and now you’re accusing me of cheating? Who’s the real homewrecker here?”
“You really want to argue with me about this?”
Helene clamped her lips shut, glaring at Madeline, but couldn’t come up with a single thing to say.
“Enough.”
Lucy’s sharp voice cut through the tension from her spot in the wheelchair. Helene looked like she wanted to scream, but Courtney pulled her close, giving her a look that said to keep her cool.
Madeline picked up her glass, took a slow sip of water, and didn’t bother giving them another glance.
