No one in the room dared to even breathe. The executives sat stiff and silent, backs ramrod straight, as if good posture could save them. The temperature was just right, but sweat soaked through every shirt, dripped down every neck. Reports were clutched tight in nervous hands, pages flipped and rechecked over and over, everyone terrified of missing a detail.
At the head of the table, Julian’s face was set like stone. He didn’t say a word, but the anger in his eyes was loud enough. Miles was sweating just as much as the rest, but at least he knew why. Only one person could make their boss this furious. It had to be the woman from the hospital. He had no clue what Ms. Monroe had said to Julian, but whatever it was, the boss left the hospital looking like he might tear the world apart.
The head of HR finished his report, barely holding it together. He stood, waiting for Julian’s response, but the room just filled with tense silence. Seconds dragged on. Julian didn’t even glance up.
Desperate, the HR head shot a look at Miles, pleading for help. Miles wiped his forehead, took a careful step forward, and bent down to murmur, “Boss, Mr. Johnson’s done with his report.”
Julian’s brow tightened. He glanced at his file, then finally started to comment on the issues he found.

Miles tiptoed over. “What’s up?”
She leaned in. “Miles, could you let Mr. Grayson know? His wife is here. She’s waiting in his office.”
Miles’s eyes went wide. The cavalry had arrived. He nodded fast. “Will do.”
As soon as Julian finished talking, Miles hurried back and leaned in. “Boss, Ms. Monroe is here.”
Julian turned, his handsome face flickering with surprise. “Madeline?”
“Yes, she is waiting in your office.” Miles sounded more confident than ever.
He’d figured something out lately. Madeline could make Julian see red, but if she softened her tone, she could calm him right down. If anyone could save them all, it was her. From now on, Miles promised himself, he was sticking to Madeline like glue.
For a second, Julian’s dark eyes flashed with confusion. Madeline had actually come to see him? What did she want? Drag him off to sign divorce papers? Was she in that much of a hurry?
“I’m not seeing her,” Julian said, his voice cold as ice.
Miles’s jaw dropped. Not seeing her? Ms. Monroe hardly ever came here on her own, and now Julian was turning her away? Did he have it all wrong? Maybe Julian wasn’t as eager as he thought...
