Helene’s words in front of Lucy were basically setting Madeline up for disaster. With expectations soaring, if Madeline didn’t cure Julian, or if she couldn’t handle some other illness, she’d be written off as a fraud. Madeline just laughed to herself. “I’m not some miracle worker. I can’t fix everything.”
Helene shot her a smile. “So, Ms. Monroe, are you admitting you’re not that skilled?”
“My skills aren’t for you, or even me, to judge. It all comes down to what happens in the end. Honestly, have you ever met a surgeon who promises one hundred percent success before you go in? If he doesn’t, does that mean he’s bad at his job?”
Madeline barely paused before adding, “And anyway, I never claimed I could cure every disease. Ms. Fortner, you’re quick to slap on the label of ‘incompetent.’ That’s kind of funny. If I really could cure anything, shouldn’t you be bowing down and calling me a miracle worker? Maybe save those ridiculous comments. Or you justdo sound like someone who never grew out of the playground.”
“You—”
A laugh floated down from upstairs. Actually, two. Josh and Brady were leaning over the second-floor railing, and who knows how long they’d been eavesdropping.
Madeline looked up and locked eyes with a pair that were cold and unreadable. Her heart skipped. Julian was standing there, hands in his pockets, face like stone.
“Come upstairs.”
His voice was calm, but you didn’t question it.
Madeline looked away, nodded politely to Lucy, grabbed her things, and went up. Lucy watched her for a moment, then turned back to the TV, not saying a word to stop her. For someone who’d just been doubting everything Madeline did, that was basically tacit approval.
Helene, meanwhile, was practically grinding her teeth, her eyes full of so much hate that it almost spilled out right there.
