The moment Helene spoke, everyone’s faces changed in their own way.
Casey let out a laugh, grinning wide, clearly amused by the label. “Boyfriend, huh.” He arched his eyebrows. “You really know what to say.”
Helene saw their reaction as a win and couldn’t hide the smile tugging at her lips.
Casey’s voice turned playful. “Since you’re so good with words, how about a little reward? Tomorrow, you get a day out in the countryside.” The smile faded from his face, replaced by a dangerous glint in his eyes that made the air feel colder.
He knew exactly what Helene was up to. She wanted to use him to stir up drama between Madeline and Julian, hoping it would make them misunderstand each other. If it was Madeline saying that, he probably wouldn’t mind being used. But who did Helene think she was, trying to play games with him?
Helene’s bravado collapsed instantly. The memory of that terrifying night came crashing back, and the chill radiating off Casey made her skin crawl. She forced herself to keep her face steady, but it was a losing battle.
She slid closer to Julian, almost whispering, “Julian…”
Casey barely glanced at Julian, a lazy smile flickering on his lips, full of challenge.
Julian met his gaze. For a second, it felt like the room exploded with tension, the air crackling between them.
Standing nearby, Madeline could feel it too, heavy and sharp. These two were a dangerous mix. When it came to bad tempers, neither of them knew how to back down. If this dragged on, she wouldn’t be surprised if they started throwing punches right here. At an event like this, the fallout would be a nightmare.
She pressed her lips together, turned to Casey, and said, “I’m starving. Come get some food with me.” Without waiting for an answer, she grabbed his arm and led him away, breaking the standoff before it could get worse.
Julian watched them go, his stare icy and unreadable.
Helene called out, “Julian, where are you going?” Watching him walk away, she felt lost and desperate.
After a few bites, she scanned the crowd, spotted someone, and stood up. “I’ve got something to take care of. I’ll be back soon.” For most people, these events were all about business, and Madeline was no different. If it weren’t for that, she wouldn’t even bother showing up.
…
Across the room, Helene stood with Raine, her eyes locked on Madeline. She watched Madeline glide across the floor, calm and collected, chatting with the bigwigs and earning admiring looks wherever she went. Helene clenched her jaw, frustration burning inside her.
She knew Julian had seen right through her earlier, and that’s why he’d turned cold the second Madeline left.
Helene picked up a glass of red wine and tossed it back in one go, her eyes blazing with anger and envy.
What made Madeline so special? Why did everyone pay so much attention to her?
