Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 268

Why did everyone always rush to defend Madeline? What made her so special, anyway?

Helene couldn't stand it. Frustration boiled inside her as she slammed her wine glass down on the table and marched straight toward Madeline.

“Helene, where are you going?” Raine called after her, worry creasing her brow. She had seen Helene pounding back glass after glass. Anyone could tell she was pretty drunk.

“Come on,” Helene said, crooking her finger, signaling Raine to follow.

Madeline had already slipped away. She’d had to drink a couple of glasses she couldn't refuse and now felt a little uneasy. Hoping some fresh air would help, she wandered outside.

The pool glistened in the night, water reflecting the cool light. Late autumn air nipped at her skin, making her shiver. She stood there for a moment, just breathing, then decided to head back in.

“Madeline.”

Someone called her name, the voice cold and sharp.

Madeline stopped and turned. Her brows twitched when she saw Helene standing just behind her.

Her face stayed calm, her eyes cold and unreadable. “What do you want?”

Helene strode right up to her and shoved hard, aiming to send her into the pool. But Madeline didn’t even flinch. She stepped aside, so fast that Helene didn’t come close to touching her.

Helene’s eyes went red as she glared at her, voice raw and wild. “Madeline, why did you come back? Why can’t you just leave Julian alone?”

She kept coming closer with every word. Madeline frowned, catching the heavy smell of alcohol on Helene’s breath. She was clearly wasted.

Madeline took a step back, keeping her distance, her gaze turning even colder.

“Why can’t you just stay dead?” Helene screamed. “Why are you still alive? I hate you. You took Julian from me.”

Madeline stared her down. “After everything you’ve done, you’re really asking me that?”

“What, you mean drugging you? Yeah, I did it. And so what? Julian still chose me back then.”

“But now everything’s different. I paid so much, I gave up so much, and now Julian looks at me like I’m nothing. It’s all your fault, Madeline. All your fault…”

Madeline glanced at her, seeing how unhinged she looked. She didn’t want to argue anymore. She stepped back and turned to leave.
