“I’d be happy to.” There was a wicked spark in Casey’s eyes.
Julian looked like he wanted a fight, and honestly, Casey was all for it.
But Julian just pulled his hand away and turned his attention elsewhere. He wasn’t interested in a showdown right now.
“What’s going on with her?” Julian asked the doctor, glancing over at the woman lying in bed.
He couldn’t stop replaying the scene from earlier in his mind. She’d been fine not that long ago, so how had she gotten so weak, so fast?
The doctor answered, “It’s nothing too serious. Ms. Monroe already had a slight fever and was pretty worn out. She was in the water a long time today, so that made things worse. Plus, her health isn’t as strong as most people’s. She really needs to rest.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed, sharp and suspicious. “What do you mean, not as strong as most people?”
Casey shot him a cold look, lips twisting into a taunting little smile.
“Want to know?” he teased.
Julian gave him a sidelong glare.
“Too bad. I’m not telling you.”
Casey knew perfectly well that Madeline had never told Julian about the kidney she’d given him, all to keep a promise. That was her secret, not his to share.
Honestly, he’d rather let Julian find out on his own just how much Madeline had done for him. He wanted to see the look on Julian’s face when the truth finally hit.
Julian turned to the doctor, but the man just fumbled for words and ended up saying nothing.
