Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 276

Julian couldn’t get a single word out.

“Mommy?” Noah’s voice was suddenly sharp, suspicion creeping in. “You’re not Mommy, are you?”

Julian’s eyes narrowed as everything started to fall into place. He answered slowly, “She’s resting right now.”

There was a click on the line. Noah hung up on him.

Julian stared at the screen, stunned. The number that had called wasn’t Noah’s. Without a second thought, he grabbed his own phone and dialed the number saved under ‘Noah.’

The phone rang and rang.

Julian’s mind was racing with questions. Who was that kid on the phone? Was it Noah? Or was it her other child? He needed answers, right now. He couldn’t wait another second.

Finally, someone answered. A sleepy, cranky voice came through the line. “Seriously, Dad, do you know what time it is? Don’t you need sleep?”

Julian froze for a moment.

The voices were almost identical, but the tone was completely different. Noah was always polite, no matter what. He would never talk like that.

Julian remembered how he thought ‘Noah’ had been acting a little different lately. He hadn’t thought much of it. He just figured the kid was adjusting to school, maybe opening up more, getting closer to him.

Now, it was obvious. The child living with him wasn’t Noah. It was someone else. Someone who looked just like him.

Julian gripped his phone, thinking back to all those little moments he’d brushed off. All the mismatched details suddenly made sense. Because they looked and sounded the same, he’d never even considered that the boy with him might not be Noah. Every red flag had been ignored.

“Hello? Dad? Are you still there?” The voice was impatient.

Julian kept his tone casual, not letting on. “Nothing. Go back to sleep.”

He ended the call and just stood there, staring into space.
