“I’ll look into what happened. If she really tried to hurt you, I’ll make sure she apologizes.”
Helene’s eyelashes fluttered. A sad, almost bitter smile crept onto her lips. “Julian, do you not believe me?”
Julian looked down, eyes searching her face. He gently moved her aside. “This is the only way to be fair to both of you.”
Fair?
Helene almost laughed out loud. If only Julian could see himself. He had already chosen sides, even if he didn’t realize it. His heart was with Madeline.
Right then, Helene spotted someone at the door. An idea sparked in her eyes. She gritted her teeth, forced herself up from the bed despite the pain, and with a small, dramatic cry, she let herself stumble straight into Julian. Her arms slipped around his waist as if by accident.
Julian’s irritation grew. He pulled her hands off, but remembering her injuries, he didn’t shove her away completely. Otherwise, she would have hit the floor.
Helene straightened up with obvious effort, her voice soft and a little too seductive. “Julian, I’m sorry. My legs are weak. You really hurt me earlier.”
Madeline had finally convinced the bodyguards to let her through, and just as she walked in, she caught sight of Helene falling into Julian’s arms. Helene was in nothing but a bathrobe, a bare shoulder on display, and her words sounded far too intimate.
Madeline’s heart clenched. She forced a cold smile, lips twitching with sarcasm.
Clearly, she had picked the wrong moment to show up.
Helene acted surprised to see her. “Ms. Monroe,” she called out, as if she hadn’t just thrown herself at Julian.
Julian turned, his gaze landing right on Madeline. He pushed Helene away and looked at Madeline. “Why are you out here?”
Madeline smiled, smooth and unbothered. “I wanted to talk to you about something, but it looks like now’s not the best time. Sorry for interrupting. I’ll let you get back to whatever this is.”
Julian glanced at Madeline, then back at Helene. Was that jealousy in Madeline’s eyes?
The door closed with a sharp click. Helene hurried after him, but this time, she actually lost her balance and hit the floor hard.
She gritted her teeth, forced herself up, and chased him anyway.
Madeline was sitting on the sofa when Julian walked over. She looked up, her smile icy. “Sorry to break up your little moment.”
Julian raised a brow. “Are you jealous?”
“Don’t flatter yourself.”
Julian gritted his teeth. “So, why did you want to see me?”
Madeline picked up her phone, ready to talk honestly about the child, but then she caught a glimpse of someone’s clothing at the door. Her face tensed. If Helene found out about the other child, things could get dangerous. She swallowed her words and looked up, her voice steady. “It’s nothing anymore. I just wanted to ask when you’re going to let me go.”
