Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 281

“You’re staying here tonight. Tomorrow, I’m taking you for a checkup,” Julian said, his voice so firm there was no point in arguing.

Madeline let out a long sigh. “Why are you so determined to have me checked out?”

“I have my reasons. It’s just a checkup. No one’s sending you to your doom. Why are you acting so nervous? Or is there something about your health you’re trying to hide?”

Madeline’s eyes flickered for a second.

Julian’s gaze never left her. His eyes were dark and impossible to read, so intense that she felt exposed under his stare.

She tried to play it cool, forcing a smile. “What could I possibly be hiding? I just hate how you always try to control everything I do.”

“It’s for your own good.”

Madeline let out a short, cold laugh. “You always say that.” Deep down, she knew he just couldn’t stand anyone keeping secrets from him. He had to know everything, so he dressed it up as concern. It was so ridiculous.

Julian’s expression turned colder. “Tell me what happened tonight with the pool.”

“What do you want to hear?” Madeline shot back. She was sure Helene had already told him her side of the story.

She glanced at the doorway and spotted Helene still standing there, hovering like she was afraid Madeline might say something to Julian that could ruin her.

Madeline couldn’t help but laugh quietly. “So, what did Helene tell you? That I pulled her into the water?”

Julian stayed silent.

Julian’s brow furrowed as he thought about it. “You said she was drunk. Couldn’t you have just let it go? She can’t swim, and that water’s deep. It could have ended really badly. You shouldn’t have dragged her in.”

Madeline felt a coldness in her chest, then she let out a harsh little laugh. “So I was never in any danger, is that it? My leg cramped up. I almost drowned too. It’s always about Helene being at risk, but I guess I was just fine, right?”

She was already tense, but Julian’s words just made her angrier.

He frowned. “That’s not what I meant, and you know it. You don’t have to twist my words.”

“Then what did you mean? That since I can swim, I was never in any real danger, not like her?”

Julian hesitated, then nodded. “Yes, that’s pretty much it. I mean, that’s what you thought at the time, right? So why are you even talking to me about this now? Do you want me to apologize to Helene for you?”
