The second Madeline went up against the man in black, she knew she was in deep trouble. This guy was on a whole different level. She could feel it in the way he moved. He was way faster, way stronger than she was.
But she didn’t have time to worry about any of that. Right now, all that mattered was getting her son back. The man slammed into her shoulder, pain shooting through her, but she still managed to wrench Noah out of his arms.
She barely had a moment to breathe before two more men climbed out of the black car.
“Madeline, look out!” Brenda screamed.
Madeline’s eyes darted around. She caught a glimpse of another man behind her, closing in fast, knife in hand. Hugging Noah to her chest made it almost impossible to move. She couldn’t dodge. All she could do was clutch her son tightly and brace herself as the blade slashed across her back.
She bit back a cry, her face going ghostly pale.
“Mommy!” Noah cried, his little face twisted with fear.
“It’s okay, baby, I’ve got you. Don’t be scared.” Madeline forced her voice to stay calm, trying to comfort him even as pain pulsed through her.
Marian and Brenda both gasped. Brenda looked like she wanted to help, but she was no match for these men. One punch from them would knock her out for good.
“Start the car!” Madeline shouted, gritting her teeth against the pain.
Brenda caught on right away, nodding hard before sprinting to the car and fumbling with the keys.
The men were on Madeline in seconds, one grabbing her by the shoulder. At the last second, Madeline shoved Noah into Marian’s arms. “Get in the car! Go, now!”
As soon as Marian had Noah, Madeline spun around, putting herself between the men and the car. She could tell exactly what they wanted. If Marian and Brenda could just get Noah out of here, he’d be safe.
Madeline tried to hold them off, using every ounce of her strength, but Marian was frozen in place, too terrified to move.
The man in black sneered at her. “Someone you don’t want to mess with.”
He nodded to the others, and they disappeared into the night.
The pain in Madeline’s back was spreading, every breath making it worse. She felt her knees buckling.
“Madeline!” Brenda rushed over, catching her before she could fall. Her hand came away sticky with blood. Brenda’s eyes filled with panic. “Madeline… you’re bleeding so much…”
“I’m fine. Just get me to the car.” Madeline’s voice was shaky, but she was determined. They couldn’t let that car out of their sight. If they lost track of Noah now, finding him again would be nearly impossible.
Brenda’s eyes were wide as she looked at Madeline’s wound. “You need a hospital. You need stitches, right now.”
