Madeline already knew the answer, but she couldn’t help herself. She just had to ask.
“Is Julian home?”
“Mr. Grayson isn’t back yet.”
Madeline nodded. “Alright.”
She headed back to the car.
Brenda glanced at her. “Madeline?”
Madeline didn’t say anything. She pulled out her phone and called Julian. Once. Twice. No answer either time.
Her face grew even colder. “We’ll wait for him here.”
Brenda worried about Madeline’s injury, but she also understood that Madeline would never leave without her child. There was no point in arguing. So Brenda started tending to her wound right there in the car.
When she lifted Madeline’s shirt and saw the long gash across her back, Brenda sucked in a sharp breath. The wound wasn’t deep, but it was long and angry, as if the attacker wanted to hurt her badly but not kill her.
Tears slipped down Brenda’s cheeks as she cleaned the cut, muttering under her breath about how Julian was a big jerk.
Meanwhile, Madeline sat with her eyes closed, her face calm and unreadable. But even though she looked composed, she was anything but calm inside.
She’d known it would come to this. Now that the truth about her child was out, trouble was waiting at every corner.
“Madeline, this is going to sting. Hang in there, okay?”
Brenda dipped a cotton swab into antiseptic and pressed it gently against the wound.
Madeline flinched from the pain, her whole body trembling for a moment. Her fingers dug into her palm, knuckles turning white.
The slash on her unmarked back looked more shocking against her skin.
Brenda found a clean jacket in the car and draped it over Madeline’s shoulders, hiding the torn shirt and the wound.
Suddenly, a car horn sounded. Madeline looked up and saw a sleek Rolls-Royce approaching, moving slowly.
Julian’s car.
