Had Madeline completely lost it?
The kid was alright here. Was she worried he'd hurt him or something? Why was she acting like it was the end of the world to get her son back?
Madeline stared at him, her eyes icy and furious.
Julian felt his patience slipping. He kept his voice low, but the anger was clear. “Why are you in such a rush? Do you really think I’d hurt your child?”
“You sent people to take him—like some kind of criminal. Of course I’m upset!” Madeline had been holding herself back, but now her temper exploded. She couldn’t keep it together anymore and practically shouted at him.
Julian’s face turned stormy.
He took her kid? That was insane.
“I took your kid? Seriously, Madeline, did you come here just to make things up?”
Madeline took a deep breath, trying hard to stay calm, but her eyes were still cold as she looked at him. “Noah was taken half an hour ago. I saw the car drive into your estate myself. Are you really going to stand there and lie to me?”
Julian’s expression grew even colder as he frowned. “You’re saying Noah’s missing?”
“Stop pretending you don’t know!”
“I swear, I didn’t send anyone after your son. Right now, the only thing that matters is finding him.”
Madeline’s eyes were red, her voice shaking. “Julian, Noah is somewhere on your property. Where else am I supposed to look?”
“You only found out about him yesterday, and now this happens? Don’t you think you owe me some kind of explanation?”
Julian’s brow was drawn tight. He watched Madeline, and she was so sure of herself. She didn’t seem like she was lying.
He was genuinely confused. He turned to Miles, his eyes hard.
Miles looked terrified and spoke up right away. “It wasn’t us. You never gave us an order. We’d never touch him.”
“Madeline, if Noah turns up here, you can do whatever you want with me.” Julian’s jaw was tight, every word forced out.
He was seething. Who the hell took the kid and tried to pin it on him? He wanted to tear them apart.
Madeline pressed her lips together. “Fine. If you want to keep playing games, I’ll play along.”
They stared each other down, neither of them willing to back off or look away.
The air in the living room was thick with tension.
Julian’s eyes stayed on her. She looked like she was about to cry, but she was still so stubborn. For a second, the anger in his expression cracked and he almost looked… conflicted. Maybe even a little guilty.
And now that he was looking closer, her face was pale and there was a faint metallic scent in the air.
Was she bleeding? Was she hurt?
