Maxwell glanced over at Madeline and Claire. “It’s already late. Even if we rush the test, the earliest we’ll have results is tomorrow. For tonight, you’ll both stay here at the Ballard estate.”
He turned to the rest of the group. “Thank you all for coming. The Ballards have arranged rooms for everyone, so please get some rest.”
Grandma Monroe nodded politely. “Thank you for your trouble.”
As Maxwell walked away, Grandma Monroe’s eyes landed on Madeline, her gaze icy and unfeeling.
Madeline looked at the people who were supposed to be her family. First it was Drew, always fighting her over her mother’s inheritance. Now Grandma Monroe was just the same.
How much money had this woman promised them to make them act like this?
Madeline lowered her eyes and gave a bitter smile. With a grandmother and father like this, what else could she feel but disappointment?
Meanwhile, after wrapping things up in the Capital, Julian went to the inn to look for Madeline. That was when Celia told him what had happened earlier that day.
She explained everything to Julian, not leaving out a single detail.
Julian’s frown deepened. “The Ballard family from the Capital?”
Celia nodded. “Madeline wanted me to tell you not to worry. She said she’s safe, and honestly, those people really didn’t seem like they wanted to hurt her. They were actually very respectful.”
“Thank you for letting me know.” Julian thanked her and hurried outside. He called Miles, who quickly arranged a private jet and filed the flight plan. Without wasting a second, Julian headed straight to the Ballard estate.
Early the next morning, the lab worked through the night and the paternity test results finally landed in Maxwell’s hands.
Maxwell nodded in agreement. “She’s right.”
Claire let out a short, cold laugh. “Exactly. That’s why we’re doing the test, isn’t it? Go ahead and open them.”
Madeline looked at Maxwell as well. “Please, let’s see the results.”
Maxwell opened the envelopes in front of both women. He took his time, reading the reports carefully. Then he looked up at Madeline, who was standing quietly to his left.
Madeline’s hands clenched at her sides, the tension turning her knuckles white.
Maxwell’s voice was steady. “Miss, there is no paternal relationship between you and Mr. Monroe.”
