Jane’s hand froze, a flicker of disbelief in her eyes.
She had barely pushed her.
“I… Madeline, I just gave you a light push. Are you trying to frame me?”
“You knew my foot was injured, and you still pushed me. How could you be so malicious? I know what this is. It’s because of what happened before. You still hold a grudge against me, don’t you, Jane?”
“No, that’s not it. I didn’t…” Jane hadn’t expected Madeline to pull a stunt like this. She stood frozen, at a complete loss.
Julian glanced down at the woman in his arms, who was as cunning as a cat, and smiled helplessly, giving her soft waist a gentle pinch.
Madeline shivered and shot him a glare.
Julian’s lips curved as he held her securely.
Shelly stepped forward, grabbing Jane’s wrist. “My daughter was kind enough to treat yours, and you dare to harm her,” she said coldly.
“No, I didn’t. It wasn’t like that. Ray, please, listen to me…”
Ray frowned. “Alright, she was trying to help Alianna out of kindness. Why are you so agitated? You don’t think she’d actually hurt Alianna in front of all of us, do you?”
“I…”
“Ray, please don’t blame Jane. It’s all my fault for making her angry in the first place.”
Madeline leaned against Julian’s chest, looking pitiful as she pretended to wipe away a couple of tears.
Ray looked at her, unsure of what to do.
“Apologize,” Julian said, his gaze fixed icily on Jane. His calm tone carried an authority that was almost suffocating.
Jane gritted her teeth so hard her jaw ached.
Madeline’s gaze trembled as she stared at Julian, and for a second, time seemed to stop. “You… what did you just call me?”
Julian smiled and stroked her head. “sweetheart. What’s wrong?”
Madeline stared intently into his deep eyes, searching for something more, but his gaze held only tenderness, not love.
She had seen the way he looked at her when he loved her, and it wasn’t like this.
It was just as he’d said. He was being good to her now because he knew he used to love her, so he understood that he should treat her well.
That was all.
When she heard him say “sweetheart,” she’d felt a flicker of hope, thinking for a moment that he remembered her.
Madeline hid her disappointment and quickly looked away. “It’s nothing.”
