"Here's what you're going to do. My men are waiting for you with the bombs, and they'll accompany you to the wedding venue. You'll go inside and plant them. Everyone trusts you, so security won't search you, and nobody will suspect a thing. Get inside the wedding building, plant the bombs, walk out. When Sparrow and Dominic are inside, one of my men detonates them."

Scarlett stared at him, and I watched the colour drain out of her face.

"You want to kill all those people?"

"Of course. Whose life could possibly be more important than Tasha's? I know you love her. I know you'd do anything to save her. So if you refuse, Tasha dies right in front of you."

"No!" Scarlett shook her head wildly. "Please, don't do this. You can't do something like this!"

His expression hardened into something with no human being behind it.

"Time's running out, Scarlett. My bombs are waiting, and they won't wait forever."

And then Scarlett did the thing that broke my heart. She dropped to her knees. Right there on the hotel floor, in her finished wedding-guest makeup, she folded her hands and looked up at him.

"Please, I'll do anything you want me to do. Just tell me what else you want and I'll do it. I beg you, don't do this! Even if you have a personal vendetta against Sparrow and Dominic, even if you want them dead, so many innocent people will suffer along with them. They have wives, husbands, children, families. It makes no sense to kill all those people just to get rid of two men!"

"What's it to me?" He scoffed. "Even if half the population of this city disappeared in the process, it wouldn't make the slightest difference to me. The only person you should care about right now is Tasha."

Then he gasped, hand to his chest again, the theatrical fool.

"Oh. Oh, I see. So Sparrow's life matters more to you than Tasha's?" He turned to me, a mocking smile spreading wide. "Tasha, do you see what I'm seeing? The very woman who would move heaven and earth for you has rejected you. She's chosen a man over you, her own niece!"
