Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 680

We froze. Both of us, statue-still, Scarlett's hand still gripping my arm, the barrel tracking lazily between us.

And then the man did the strangest thing. He reached up and began peeling at his own face, gripping his jaw and tugging, and a full beard came away in his hand, a costume piece, and beneath it was a face I knew.

A face that had haunted me for days.

"Big Bryan!" My voice cracked on his name.

I'd sensed it the moment he entered, that flicker of familiarity I couldn't place, a shape and a stance I'd seen before, but I'd never once imagined it would be him, standing in our suite with a gun and a fake beard like a nightmare that had learned to pick locks. Hadn't he done enough? What more could this man possibly want from me?

My eyes darted, frantic, and landed on Scarlett's hand.

Her phone. She had her phone up, screen lit, and I saw the number on it. Sparrow's number. Already dialled.

And perhaps Big Bryan saw it too.

"Put the phone down!" His voice cracked through the room like a whip, and the gun swung to centre on her. "Both of you. Put your phones down."

My phone hit the floor before I even knew I'd let go of it. Scarlett's followed a half-second later, and she twisted around to make sure hers had landed face down.

"Kick them away." Bryan's voice stayed level, bored almost, the gun steady in his fist. "Both of you. Kick them across the floor."

We kicked. Two phones went skating across the floor in opposite directions like hockey pucks.

"Now move. Over there, against the wall."

We moved. Our backs met the wall.
