Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 630

What did Mum mean by that text?

I walked up the path, and as I approached the entrance, I spotted my bodyguards' car parking a short distance away, the two of them settling in for their usual watch. I waved at them, and they waved back, and I went inside.

The house was too quiet.

That was the first thing I noticed. My mother's house was never 'too quiet.' She always had music playing, or the television on, or she was talking on the phone to one of her friends, her voice carrying through the whole place like she was broadcasting. But now there was nothing. Just silence, thick and wrong.

"Mum?" I called out, my voice echoing off the walls.

No answer.

My heart began to pound as I walked through the living room, past the kitchen, down the hallway to her bedroom. I pushed the door open slowly.

Someone was lying on the bed.

I smiled with relief as I recognized the shape of her, the familiar curve of her under the covers. She must have been tired. Maybe she was napping and didn't hear her phone. I walked toward the bed, already reaching out to wake her gently.

Then I stopped.

There was a strange smell in the air. Sweet and chemical, something I couldn't place but that made my skin prickle. And I had the uncanny feeling, the kind you get when you know, absolutely know, that you're being watched.

"Mum?" I tried again, shaking her shoulder.

She didn't move.

"Mum." I shook her harder. "Mum, wake up."

Nothing. Her face was slack, her breathing so shallow I could barely see her chest rise and fall.

Alarm flooded through me. I fumbled for my phone in my bag, my fingers clumsy, pulling it out to call Dominic. But before I could dial, my hand shook violently and the phone slipped from my fingers, clattering to the floor.
