Dustin immediately spoke up, "We agreed on ten bucks a box. You're being too generous, Xanthe. Extra meat and rice should be an extra two bucks. As long as every meal tastes this good, we aren't the type to cheap out."
"Right, Arthur?"
Arthur's eyes were filled with gratitude. "Exactly. Boys, she's trying to make a living, and her cooking is worth every penny. Listen to Dustin—extra sides are two bucks. I know you guys aren't stingy."
"We follow the rules of the trade, Xanthe. Don't be shy about charging what it's worth. Hit me with some extra meat—damn, this rib soup is packed with flavor. These ingredients couldn't have been cheap."
Arthur grinned. "They weren't. She spent years in the countryside, so she's got a sharp eye. She knows exactly what just came out of the ground and how fresh it is. Eat up, guys. She's hoping to build up a steady route."
One of the crew members piped up, "No wonder Arthur hasn't been on the clock lately. He's been playing assistant! There's no way one person could prep all this. You aren't switching careers on us, are you, Arthur?"
"Shut your trap and eat your food," Arthur shot back, his face turning slightly red.
Another guy laughed. "Don't mind us, Arthur, but if the last woman Dustin introduced you to had been willing to hustle and sell lunches like Xanthe, we wouldn't have been eating garbage for years."
"Yeah, seriously. Selling catered lunches definitely brings in more cash than a regular stall, but I guess 'her majesty' didn't want to get her hands dirty. Xanthe is different. Rain or shine, hot or cold, we know she's going to be here. We're already looking forward to tomorrow."
The crew erupted into laughter, and Amber couldn't help but smile too.
In her past life, without these guys, her father would have died ten times over.
Having Xanthe start this lunch business wasn't just to help her become financially independent; it was to give Arthur a glaring comparison.
Everything Grace refused to do for him, Xanthe did without hesitation, and she did it better. She genuinely wanted to build a life with him.
Arthur looked a bit awkward, but thankfully, Amber's arrival with Vance shifted the focus.
"Did you two eat at school?" Arthur asked. Before Amber could introduce her classmate, Xanthe had already packed two fresh boxes and handed them over.
Vance smiled shyly. "Hi, Xanthe, I'm Vance. I'm Amber's classmate. I could smell your cooking from a block away."
Dustin gave him a teasing smirk. "Kid's got a bright future, kissing up that smoothly. But wow, Amber, changing guys already? Your dad woke up, and you woke up too?"
Amber glared at Dustin, but before she could speak, Arthur scolded, "Just eat your food. Even a mountain of meat can't plug that mouth of yours."
"Don't mind Dustin, Amber, he doesn't have a filter. And don't take it personally, Vance, they just like to joke around."
Vance laughed brightly. "It's fine, Arthur! My dad is a foreman too, so I know how the crews talk. I get it. But just for the record—if Amber ever is looking to trade up, keep me in mind. I'm definitely available."
