When Yvonne Sargent arrived at Riverport High to find Amber Newman, Mr. Lambert was in the middle of brewing himself a cup of premium tea.
He had barely taken a sip when Ms. Sterling strutted in, her heels clicking urgently against the floor.
Before the principal could scold her for losing her professional composure, Ms. Sterling gasped out, "Mr. Lambert, um, the heiress to the Sargent Group, Ms. Sargent, has arrived. She says she wants to tour the campus and meet our seniors who are about to take their final exams."
Mr. Lambert froze, wondering if his ears were playing tricks on him. "Are you talking about the Yvonne Sargent who vowed to marry Mr. Madison, only for him to completely reject her?"
Ms. Sterling nodded fervently. "Yes!"
Mr. Lambert bolted out of his chair. "What is she doing here? Doesn't the Sargent Group look down on student sponsorship programs?"
"I'm not exactly sure, but her car has already pulled up. You really should go greet her."
This was a major VIP. Sharif Madison had recently funded a new building, and the school library was still desperately in need of donations.
Mr. Lambert paced back and forth. "Let's go, let's go. We'll welcome her first. In a few minutes, give Mr. Zeller a call. Fill him in so he can notify Mr. Madison."
The principal had a sinking feeling. The heiress of the Sargent Group—a company that never sponsored students—showing up unannounced wasn't just a friendly visit. Was she here to challenge Mr. Madison and poach his people!?
In a panic, Mr. Lambert dragged Ms. Sterling and a few teachers who had been chatting in the office out to form a welcoming committee.
By the time they hurried over, Yvonne had just stepped out of her car.
She carried herself with the haughty grace of a queen. Mr. Lambert bowed his head respectfully. "Ms. Sargent, to what do we owe this incredible honor? Please, come inside."
Yvonne's red lips curled into a smirk, her presence overwhelmingly dominant. "I'm here because of Sharif's recent wave of generosity toward your students, naturally. It's been a while, Mr. Lambert. Let's skip the pleasantries. My assistant mentioned that at last week's city-wide competition, the two students you recommended were so impressive that Sharif actually showed up in person to test them."
"My father has constantly urged me to learn corporate management from Sharif, so here I am. Mr. Lambert, would it be convenient for me to meet the champion of this Physics Olympiad? I must admit, I'm incredibly curious about her."
A cold sweat broke out on Mr. Lambert's forehead. Leaving aside the fact that the Sargent Group had no student sponsorship program, even if they did, the heiress wouldn't come to a high school personally to scout them.
—She really was here to wage war!?
As he ushered Yvonne into the building, the principal shot a desperate side-eye at his director.
Catching the hint, Ms. Sterling lagged behind and immediately dialed Julian Zeller.
Sharif Madison had landed back in Riverport at three in the morning. With a standard briefing scheduled for nine-ten, he had Lyle drop him off straight at the corporate tower. He caught a few hours of sleep in his private suite before starting the workday.
The morning briefing dragged past ten o'clock due to complications with a major project that Sharif had to resolve personally.
Julian Zeller was taking minutes and tracking Sharif's directives when his phone buzzed. A quick glance showed it was Ms. Sterling from Riverport High. He set his laptop aside and stepped out to take it.
