The moment Yvonne's fingers grazed her chin, Amber immediately took two steps backward.
She offered a polite, superficial smile. "Ms. Sargent, I am incredibly flattered by your offer. Truly, I am. But my sponsorship was arranged strictly through the school's official regulations."
"I don't think it would be appropriate to switch companies now. I might just be a student with no real-world experience, but my textbooks say that once a contract is signed, you can't just go back on it. Even if you were willing to cover my breach of contract fee, I haven't even taken my final exams yet. I'm terrified that if I mess with my sponsorship now, I'll end up a sitting duck."
"Ms. Sargent, if you're really determined to sign me, perhaps you should negotiate directly with Mr. Madison. But to be honest, I don't know him very well. I just remember during the interview, he made it very clear that his decisions are final. He looked... incredibly intimidating. I'm just a student. I follow whatever arrangements the school makes for me."
"I'm so sorry, Ms. Sargent. I really can't help you."
Amber bowed deeply, playing the role of the obedient, naive high schooler perfectly.
Whatever rumor had sent Yvonne rushing over here to demand a betrayal, Amber had already signed the paperwork. Besides, she couldn't exactly announce that her penalty for breaking the contract was a staggering ten billion.
Even if Yvonne refused to pay it, simply hearing those terms would send the woman's insane jealousy into overdrive. The finals weren't even over yet, and Amber didn't need the extra drama. Plus, Yvonne didn't actually want to sponsor her; she just wanted to probe Amber to figure out her connection to Sharif.
She was a psychotic romantic in her past life, and she was exactly the same now. Lady, please just let me go. I'm minding my own business.
Yvonne wasn't the least bit surprised by the rejection. What she hadn't expected was how sharply this supposedly dumb little tramp spoke. Every excuse was perfectly logical, pushing the responsibility onto Sharif and the school.
Hah. Did the girl think Yvonne was an idiot? Did she really think Yvonne couldn't tell she was being brushed off?
Joanne had warned her that Amber was a silver-tongued little fox. It seemed she was right.
"Don't be nervous, Amber. I just came to have a friendly chat. I know this puts you in a tough spot, but I really hope you'll consider it. The Sargent Group will cover any penalty fees; you won't have to worry about a thing. All you have to do is tell Mr. Madison... actually, you don't even have to do that. Just have the principal call him right now, and you can personally tell him the deal is off."
"Think about it." As she spoke, the ever-prepared Yvonne glanced at her assistant, who pulled a document out of his briefcase to prove she wasn't just making empty promises.
She held it out to Amber. "Take a look at the terms. If there's anything you don't like or anything else you want, just say the word."
Yvonne waited to see how Amber would squirm out of this one.
