Lucian's voice was freezing cold. The moment he found out the visitor was Yvonne, his pupils had contracted in pure, unadulterated rage.
In his past life, aside from his intense disdain for Sharif Madison, the person Lucian hated most in the world was Yvonne Sargent.
She was an absolute psychopath. To get her hands on Sharif, or to force him into marriage, she was willing to do anything—including orchestrating Lucian being drugged and forced into bed with someone else.
Lucian's very first time with Amber had been entirely thanks to Yvonne's sick games.
Yvonne had tried to force him to backstab Sharif. He had refused because he was on the verge of leaving the Madison Group to launch his own startup. Sharif and Yvonne, born with silver spoons in their mouths, would never understand that for a poor man to flip the script on his life, he had to meticulously build his resume and integrate into elite circles.
In his previous life, before his startup finally took off, he had suffered immensely because of Yvonne's sabotage. He had dodged her traps time and time again, but he hadn't managed to avoid the drink she spiked.
Neither in his past life nor in this one had Lucian ever wanted to be with Amber.
His desperate drive for success was solely so he could achieve financial freedom and finally be worthy of going back for Joanne. But because of Yvonne's twisted scheme, he ended up sleeping with Amber. Lucian felt an agonizing wave of guilt for betraying Joanne.
Even though he hadn't contacted Joanne in his past life, he had secretly kept tabs on her, waiting for the day he was successful enough to bring her back to him. He had been planning to come clean to Amber and leave her, but out of sheer guilt, he delayed reaching out to Joanne—which indirectly led to her dying alone in despair.
Whenever Lucian thought about his beloved Joanne dying a miserable, hopeless death in his previous life, he wanted to murder Amber.
He didn't love Amber, and he utterly despised Yvonne.
Yvonne wouldn't just show up at the school to see Amber for no reason. Thankfully, he had recognized Yvonne's assistant—the same lackey who had constantly delivered Yvonne's threats to him in his past life. He would recognize that man's face even if it were burned to ashes.
Amber's shoulders were still aching from when Wade and his thugs had slammed her against the wall a few days ago. The sudden, violent impact from Lucian sent a shockwave of blinding pain through her body, and a cold sweat broke out on her forehead.
She slid down the wall and crouched on the ground, biting her lip hard to keep from screaming that he was out of his mind, but the sheer agony drained her strength.
Seeing her pale face and cold sweat, Lucian felt a brief, involuntary pang in his chest, but he remained frozen in place, staring down at her with cold indifference.
Amber had always hated pain. In their past life, a simple paper cut from a fruit knife would have her sobbing uncontrollably.
He had thought she was being dramatic back then, and he thought the exact same thing now.
"You can fake being hurt all you want, Amber, but you're still answering my question. Do you really think acting pathetic is going to make my heart bleed for you?" It absolutely wouldn't. In his past life, he only played along with her theatrics out of obligation. Now, he felt nothing but disgust.
If she was trying to play the victim to make him feel sorry for her, she could save her breath.
Hearing this, Amber let out a breathless, mocking laugh.
Once the agonizing spike of pain in her shoulder receded slightly, she slowly pushed herself up, looking at him with absolute contempt. "Are you done spewing garbage, Lucian? Have you ever genuinely cared about my pain, even once? Don't pretend you have. And even if you did, hearing it now just makes me want to vomit."
