When Lucian received Grace's call, he was at the supermarket buying fruit.
In his past life, let alone a supermarket, he had never even set foot in the local fruit shop downstairs.
Now, he had to handle everything himself.
"Lucian, let's just go to the fruit shop. Even though the fruit here looks about the same, we're visiting Grace. We should spend a little more. I'll pay for it."
Joanne had accepted a necklace from Miles last night. She estimated it was worth at least tens of thousands, if not more, so she definitely wasn't hurting for cash.
Lucian frowned. "How could I let you pay when we're visiting my mom? Besides, it's her money anyway. If she wants a grand gesture to outshine Xanthe, then I'll give it to her."
"But..."
"No buts," Lucian gently smoothed Joanne's hair, his tone dripping with affection. "Don't you know my mom by now? She just wants to save face right now, but later she'll complain that it's all the same anyway, and that we could have just bought it off a pushcart or from the supermarket, put a nice bow on it, and it would look just as high-end."
"Trust me, Joanne, my mom just cares about appearances. We'll pick out a few nice things here, get someone to wrap them up nicely, and it won't cost much. If anything, she'll probably praise me for being frugal."
Joanne smiled. Lucian's mother was exactly that kind of person. Joanne considered herself quite the penny-pincher, but compared to Grace, she was an amateur.
"Alright, I'll listen to you." Joanne's eyes curved into a sweet smile. *Better yet, I don't have to spend my own money!*
Lucian affectionately patted her head. Just then, his phone rang. Speak of the devil.
As soon as he answered, Grace's furious orders blasted through the speaker.
"Lucian, forget the fruit basket! I'm sending you money right now. Go buy me premium health supplements and luxury skincare! No, buy me gifts that are even more expensive than those!"
Lucian frowned. "Mom..."
"Mom what?! Your mother is about to die from anger because of that wretched Amber, and you're dragging your feet?"
Since Lucian didn't respond the way she wanted, Grace just kept ranting. "I am absolutely not swallowing this insult! I don't care if it means spending money on that little hussy Joanne, you have to do exactly as I say!"
