Only after Amber finished securing her trades did she realize someone was standing right beside her.
He was wearing tinted aviator sunglasses, his soft hair styled impeccably. He wore a light-colored button-down with a thin white cardigan draped casually over his shoulders, paired with beige trousers. He looked effortlessly relaxed, radiating a refined, gentlemanly charm.
Seeing that she was completely absorbed in her laptop, the man hadn't interrupted. A slight smile played on his lips as he crossed his arms, leaning casually against the edge of her table.
It wasn't until Amber finally noticed him that a voice, smooth as a spring breeze, spoke. "Apologies. I didn't startle you, did I? Hello. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Miles Yates. How may I address you?"
Miles had been splashed awake with ice water by Yvonne Sargent again. The day before yesterday, he had taken Joanne out on a yacht overnight, and yesterday he had dealt with some business, so he slept in late.
The moment he fell asleep, Yvonne threw water on him, snapping, "Where's the girl you were supposed to deal with? Is this how you blow me off?" She then threw a stack of surveillance reports documenting Amber's every move, including her fifth mock exam scores.
"Miles, since you bragged to me that you could handle Amber and humiliate Sharif, actually do it. Look at her scores. Thank god she missed a subject, and thank god this was only a mock exam. If this were the real Exam..." Yvonne had spat one final line: "How exactly are you handling this?"
When Miles saw Amber's transcript, he was initially stunned, which quickly turned into profound intrigue. Even though he had been highly interested in Amber since the moment Joanne appeared, he had never felt a pull this strong.
He demanded Yvonne tell him exactly where Amber was and what she was doing. Yvonne told him she was at the library, studying with a classmate.
Yvonne had sneered, claiming Amber was a master manipulator. She said Joanne was stolen away by Lucian, so Amber targeted Sharif. But knowing she wasn't quite high-society material and refusing to give up her backup options, she was now openly flirting with a male classmate to make Sharif jealous. She accused Amber of being completely venomous and calculating.
Miles hadn't bought a word of it. He cleaned himself up, drove over, and observed her from outside the library long before Vance ever stepped out. She was absolutely nothing like the girl Yvonne and Joanne described.
She was clean, sharp, and intensely focused. When she said she was studying, she meant it. Even when he approached, her entire attention was locked onto her screen.
Miles was genuinely curious. Was that laptop better looking than him?
He was a notorious playboy, but wherever he went, he always turned heads.
Yet she just stared at her screen. Maybe he caught her at a bad time as she was closing out her tabs, so he couldn't see what she was working on, and she hadn't noticed him until she stretched her shoulders and realized a living, breathing, gorgeous man was standing right there.
Miles couldn't quite describe the feeling. It was like a flower desperately releasing its scent to attract a butterfly, only for the scent to fade while the butterfly completely ignored it.
Amber really should have checked her horoscope before leaving the house today. To think Miles Yates would actually seek her out again in this life.
But it made sense. Yvonne had been completely outmaneuvered by her, so naturally, he'd make his entrance. Amber just hadn't expected it so soon. Wasn't he busy sleeping with Joanne? Why pivot back to her?
