With the exam prep period in full swing, there was no way Joanne Xavier was going to stay at school or study at home.
She would have given anything to skip school altogether.
Since being spotted by Lucian Juarez when she was parting ways with Miles Yates, she had reined in her behavior slightly, but her mind was still wandering. Almost the second the teachers announced the prep period for the Exam, she texted Miles.
Miles didn't reply until this morning, leaving Joanne in a state of nervous panic. She worried that playing too hard to get on the cruise ship had made him lose interest.
But then, his text popped up with an address. "Babe, since it's prep time, why don't you come to the library and let me keep you company while you study?"
Naturally, Joanne agreed.
But after taking the time to dress up and once again ignoring Lucian's calls and messages, she arrived only to see Miles laughing and chatting with Amber Newman.
Joanne panicked.
Miles knew all about Amber and held leverage over Joanne. Had he invited her to the library on behalf of Yvonne Sargent? But Miles and Yvonne didn't get along; he wouldn't help her.
Then how could she explain this scene?
Amber was momentarily surprised to see Joanne show up, but on second thought, if Joanne could scheme with Yvonne to trip her up, Miles showing up to hit on her perfectly explained the sudden alliance.
Seeing Joanne turn pale, clearly terrified that she might say something to ruin her chances with Miles, Amber let out a laugh. "Our beautiful School Belle, there's no need to look so tense. We're in a library. No loud noises allowed."
"Amber..."
"Don't rush me, I wasn't finished. This handsome guy was just asking me about you. You know, what your hobbies are. He said he's pursuing you. Since he saw I go to the same school, he decided to ask. See how much he cares about you?"
If Amber had a fan in her hand, she would have looked exactly like a madam enthusiastically pitching her favorite girl.
Joanne was vain to her core; in her past life, she was desperate for a sugar daddy. In this life, meeting an ultimate trust-fund heir like Miles meant she would do absolutely anything to win his favor.
But she loved playing innocent. Self-righteous, just like Lucian. Hearing that Miles was "pursuing" her was guaranteed to make her heart soar.
Perfect. Lucian getting played was exactly what she wanted to see. The more humiliating, the better.
Sure enough, upon hearing Amber say Miles was pursuing her, Joanne practically floated on air.
Seeing Joanne's pathetic yet eager expression, the corner of Miles's mouth ticked upward. This Amber really was something, no wonder Sharif Madison was so impressed. She was incredibly interesting. With a single sentence, she managed to simultaneously disgust him and thrill Joanne.
It seemed she already knew who he was.
"Sorry about that, babe. I walked into the library and saw your classmate studying, so I couldn't help but say hello. I hope I didn't upset you. But, babe, what's this about your classmate saying you have a boyfriend at school?"
Miles played right back. She had deliberately grossed him out, so he wasn't about to let it slide.
