Arthur was completely taken aback by Grace discharging herself.
Seeing her pale face and carrying her own bags, his heart immediately ached. "Grace, why did you leave the hospital? The doctor said you needed to stay until Monday at least! Why would you..." He trailed off, suddenly realizing she must be furious and had checked herself out just to spite him.
"Lying in a hospital bed is the same as lying in my own bed," Grace said, playing the martyr. "Arthur, thank you for working so hard these past few days. You took care of me and ran the diner. I feel terrible about it. Oh, by the way... did you hire a temp worker?" She shot a venomous glare at Xanthe, who was washing dishes in the back.
Hearing Grace call Arthur's name, Xanthe instinctively glanced over. Loretta had warned her about Grace—how she used her fading looks to string Arthur along, taking advantage of him for twelve years.
Loretta had told Xanthe that happiness had to be fought for. Grace didn't deserve Arthur's devotion. Xanthe knew she had to be smart about this.
"She's not a temp worker, she's..."
"If she's not a temp, then she's just a helper," Grace cut him off smoothly. "Arthur, because of me, you missed out on your construction wages, and you even had to bring someone in to help. Thank you so much, Arthur."
She didn't care who Xanthe was. If the woman was trying to cozy up to Arthur, let her work for free! Did Xanthe really think she was going to get paid? She needed to look in a mirror.
"Arthur, I haven't eaten breakfast yet. Come with me to the market to buy some fresh groceries. Lucian should be awake by now, and his competition is tomorrow. I want him to have a good meal. Miss, the diner is in your hands. Thank you!"
Grace shoved her hospital bags into Arthur's arms, parading out like royalty.
Arthur frowned, wanting to clarify that Xanthe wasn't just a helper, but Grace was clearly throwing a tantrum. She was forcing him to choose right then and there: walk away with her, or stay with Xanthe.
"Go ahead, Arthur. I've got things handled here. Grace just got out of the hospital, you should help her," Xanthe said with a gentle, accommodating smile. Loretta was right—this woman was going to be difficult to deal with.
"Alright. Xanthe, just keep an eye on things. I'll drop her off and be right back." Arthur hurried after Grace.
Xanthe smiled to herself. Amber had warned her this would be a process. She would make Arthur fall for her eventually.
Meanwhile, a very full Amber took the bus to a downtown bookstore to buy her Olympiad prep books. Perhaps she spent too much time browsing, because the moment she stepped out, she was hit by a sudden, torrential downpour.
Spring in Riverport was unpredictable—sunny mornings could easily turn into midday monsoons.
Amber didn't have an umbrella. Shielding the books with her plastic bag, she sprinted the half-mile to the nearest bus stop. As if the universe hated her, the wind whipped the rain sideways, entirely soaking her.
