Two Reborn, One Throne novel Chapter 60

The luxury car merged back into the sluggish traffic.

Amber almost laughed in exasperation. "I'm completely drenched, Mr. Madison. I simply didn't want to ruin your car's interior. Please forgive my hesitation."

He had always possessed that infuriatingly arrogant attitude that made her want to slap him. He was a brilliant man; why was he cursed with such a toxic mouth?

"Is that so? Are you implying I'm making a fuss over nothing by offering you a ride?"

Amber: "..."

I absolutely did not say that. Don't put words in my mouth!

"It seems you don't understand me as well as I thought, Miss Newman. And here I assumed you had me completely figured out. Or are you just playing hard to get?"

Amber: "..."

Can you just stop talking? Look at your smug face! You are genuinely so irritating!

Sharif hadn't actually planned to pick her up. But when he saw her shivering at the bus stop, her hair plastered to her face and her uniform soaked through, an inexplicable surge of annoyance gripped him.

His sharp words were purely defensive. This little fox clearly knew exactly how to push his buttons. Afraid of ruining my car's interior? Please. If he cared about that, would he have signed her? Would he have pulled over?

He was just frustrated because she never gave him a straight answer.

Over the past two days, his private investigators had found absolutely nothing useful. Her routine was agonizingly boring: school, home, repeat. She barely went out.

It was highly probable that after she completely dismantled the tracking software Charles had embedded in the laptop, she was just laying low to make him drop his guard.

On the surface, she was a perfect student. Why was she playing the role of a good girl so flawlessly? Had she really done nothing else besides tricking him into sponsoring her?

Sharif reached out and silently turned on her seat heater. His fingers were elegant, his movements undeniably gentlemanly.

Amber ignored his questions. To him, she probably did look like she was playing hard to get, but she knew he wasn't exactly a saint himself. Had he really driven out of his way to pick her up just because his investigators reported she was caught in the rain?

Seeing that she had no intention of replying, Sharif let it drop. He elegantly crossed his long legs.

—He went back to reading his documents.

In her past life, whenever Amber accompanied him on business trips, he was always reading documents. It blew her mind that he could stare at paperwork all day and still have perfect vision. Some people were just God's favorites.

The rain outside intensified. Though spring showers usually passed quickly, this one caused a gridlock.

It was the weekend, and everyone returning to the city from out of town was now trapped in the downpour.

Sharif showed zero signs of impatience. In the three years Amber worked as his secretary, she had never seen him panic. The only time she ever saw him lose his temper was the day she handed in her resignation.

That day, he was consumed by a terrifying, suffocating darkness, pacing like an enraged lion. It was as if she had committed an unforgivable betrayal, and one wrong move would cause him to tear her apart. Aside from his sharp tongue and ruthless business tactics, Sharif was practically flawless.
