It took Grace four and a half hours to restore the two-bedroom apartment to its usual pristine state.
She was so exhausted she could barely stand up straight.
As she scrubbed Lucian's clothes, she muttered curses at Arthur under her breath.
"That spineless pushover! He said he'd come by later to clean, and it's already pitch black outside. Is he trying to work me to death? He hasn't even cooked dinner yet. Is he trying to starve us?"
Seething with rage, Grace violently tossed all of Lucian's undershirts into the washing machine.
She used to teach Amber that all of Lucian's clothes—especially his undershirts—had to be hand-washed. It wasn't so bad in the summer, but winter washing was a nightmare. Since Lucian had let them pile up for days, the sweat stains had set in, making them incredibly difficult to scrub out.
If it weren't for the fact that Lucian was competing in the physics Olympiad tomorrow and bringing home fifty thousand dollars, Grace—who hadn't washed his clothes in seven years—would have already exploded. *You ungrateful brat, you're used to being pampered, but if you're going to pick a fight with Amber, you should at least learn how to cook and clean for yourself!*
*You get to relax while I break my back! I spent years training a full-time maid for you, and now you have the nerve to push her away!?*
Grace was miserable. She was exhausted. Why couldn't her son inherit even a third of her talent for manipulating Arthur? Wait, now even Arthur was ignoring her. Who exactly set him up with that hussy anyway?
If she ever found out who was messing with her plans, she would tear them to shreds.
It was absolutely infuriating.
Even worse, she still hadn't gotten her thirty thousand dollars back from Joanne. No, she had to track the girl down. It had been days; that little tramp might have already blown through the cash.
Grace washed her hands and knocked on Lucian's door. "Lucian, I'm heading over to Arthur's place to check on Amber. You stay here and study hard. Bring home that fifty thousand dollars tomorrow. I'll bring dinner back from Arthur's, so don't run off."
Amber had been hit by a car, so it would look bad if Grace didn't visit. Besides, she could kill three birds with one stone: demand the money from Joanne, check on Amber's condition, and score a free dinner. Arthur should consider himself lucky she was being so generous as to visit. He better not try any funny business.
What Grace didn't know was that even if she caused a massive scene at Joanne's house, she wasn't going to find her.
...
Five hours earlier.
Waking up naturally, Joanne took her time getting dressed to the nines. She thought she had successfully dodged Loretta's demands for the cash last night. To her horror, the moment she opened her door, Loretta was sitting at the top of the stairs, staring at her.
"Good morning, Joanne. See how much I care about you? I waited until you were fully rested before coming over. Now, since I've been so considerate, why don't you settle up my wages?"
Joanne's wonderful mood shattered instantly.
