Two Reborn, One Throne novel Chapter 66

Arthur turned his gaze to Xanthe.

Xanthe followed Amber's script perfectly. "Yes, Arthur. My cousin brought me here to work with her, but I didn't expect her to have a family emergency right away. If I'm imposing on you, it's completely fine. I can buy a ticket back to my village tonight at the latest."

Arthur instantly felt terrible. "I never said I wanted you to leave. Amber, what exactly are you suggesting? Do you want me to front the rent money for Loretta so Xanthe can stay next door until she gets back?"

Amber nodded. "Exactly. When Loretta gets back, Xanthe still can't stay with her. They live in a tiny apartment just like ours. Loretta is going to have to find her a place anyway."

"Since she needs to rent a place regardless, why not do it now? Dad, you can cover the deposit. Plus, I don't think Xanthe needs to sit around doing nothing until Loretta returns. She can make boxed lunches! With her amazing cooking skills, she could sell meals near the schools or at your construction sites for a few bucks a pop. She'd have an income, a place to stay, and she'd be able to pay you back."

"What do you think of my idea, Xanthe?"

Xanthe looked like she was about to cry. "Amber... you think I could sell meals on my own?"

"Of course! Just ask my dad. Let's be realistic. Loretta does domestic work, and she'll probably want you to follow in her footsteps. But being a maid is tough. I know you could handle it, but honestly, you'd make way more selling food. You could easily pull in thousands of dollars a month."

"You'd have your own money and your own place. You wouldn't have to rely on Loretta; you could support yourself. Xanthe, you always need a backup plan in life, don't you think?"

Tears streamed down Xanthe's face. Loretta had told her she was coming to the city to be set up on a blind date. She thought Arthur was a good man and genuinely wanted to try building a family with him, but she had never once considered how she would stand on her own two feet.

Amber was like an absolute angel. She had used the excuse of setting up a blind date for her father just to get Xanthe out of the clutches of the Sutton household. If things worked out with Arthur, great. But if they didn't? Would she have to throw a tantrum, stalk him, or force a marriage?

If she could sell food or get a job, even if the Suttons tried to drag her back, she could just throw some cash in their faces and buy her freedom.

Xanthe had never imagined her life could have an entirely different trajectory.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Xanthe suddenly broke down, grasping Amber's hands tightly. "Amber, even if you asked for my life right now, I'd give it to you. Arthur, I'm begging you, please help me rent that room next door. Loan me the money to start a food cart, and I swear I will pay you back."

Amber quickly helped her up. "Xanthe, what are you doing?"

She patted her hands gently, her eyes conveying a silent promise. She had promised to protect her when she brought her out of the village, and she was going to make sure Xanthe never had to return to the Suttons.
