Arthur was stunned. "Grace... Grace was here?"
His panicked and anxious expression made Amber frown slightly. "She just left. She came to get the diner keys."
Arthur immediately sensed something was wrong. "Amber, tell me the truth. Did you make her mad?"
She hadn't fully recovered from her hospital stay, yet she came all the way here to personally get the keys? Arthur didn't buy it. Amber must have chased her off, and that was why she left the twelve hundred dollars—to cut ties with him.
"Arthur..."
Seeing Arthur getting worked up, Xanthe worried Amber would be scolded. But before she could speak, Amber smoothly cut in, "Dad, do you really think Grace is that petty?"
Arthur froze.
Amber feigned annoyance. "I was the one who got hit by a car, remember? She came over to check on me. She left this money and told you to buy me some good food. Dad, don't misunderstand her. She just realized you weren't here, and Lucian called her, so she headed home early."
Arthur was astonished. "Really?!"
"Why would I lie to you? Or is Grace really that petty in your eyes?" Amber teased playfully.
Arthur thought about it. If Grace really had stormed off in a rage, she definitely would have called him to complain. Since his phone hadn't rung once, it meant Amber was probably telling the truth.
*Sigh, it's my fault,* he thought. *I really shouldn't have just left her alone today. But Amber was hit by a car, I didn't have a choice. I wanted to make sure Amber was settled before going to the apartment, but helping Xanthe rent the room ended up taking the whole night.*
*Still, she could have called me before coming over. Lucian completely trashed that apartment, I wonder if she had to clean it all by herself? And I promised to make chicken broth for Lucian, I wonder if she made dinner for him?*
"Amber, Grace just got out of the hospital, and Lucian is going through a rebellious phase. You need to be more understanding. It's not easy for a single mother raising a son. Next time something like this happens, you need to be clearer with me." Arthur's tone softened significantly.
Amber wanted to roll her eyes, but she knew perfectly well that her dad couldn't handle hearing a single bad word about Grace right now. She would just play along for now.
It didn't matter. Grace was inevitably going to act passive-aggressive and complain about Amber to him later. If Amber just agreed with him now, the stark contrast of Grace badmouthing her later would make her dad realize the truth on his own.
"Got it. So, how much did Mrs. Zeller rent the room to Xanthe for?" Amber quickly steered the conversation back on track.
Relieved that Amber hadn't actually angered Grace, Arthur enthusiastically held up five fingers. "Five hundred dollars!"
"Amber, you have no idea how happy we are! Now that the housing is sorted, I'm having my coworker weld a food cart for us tomorrow. Xanthe and I already talked it over. We'll spend tomorrow buying a motorized cart and all the cooking supplies. If everything goes smoothly, we'll open for business the day after!"
