Two Times the Charm (Clara and Emmett) novel Chapter 145

"...I beg to differ!" Clara said with a sigh, "I'm not being overly optimistic, but Leah is your kin, we know her! Maybe she's not as simple as I think and maybe she's got a bit of a soft spot for Emmett, but... I don't think she's as complicated as you make her out to be!"

"Let's hope so."

"I really appreciate all the running around you've done to help me," Clara said cautiously, "As for the road ahead, I think I want to walk it alone. Elio, you should keep moving forward too!"

Elio laughed with a hint of irony, "Yeah right! You heartless woman, first you stole my heart, then you just up and married Emmett! I should just give up! Don't worry about me, although I'm not as charming as him, there are plenty of women who fancy me! I've never been short of female company since you left."

Clara knew he always used this kind of talk to hide his true feelings.

But calling him out on it wouldn't do any good, it would just make them both feel awkward.

"Well, good for you! Pick a nice girl and settle down! You're at the age where you should be married, don't worry your parents."

"You're such a nag, anyone would think you were my elder!" Elio huffed, "Alright, if you say there's nothing to worry about, then I won't doubt it! But I must warn you, be careful! I don't know much about Leah, but I know plenty of women chase after Emmett! Your position is on many women's radar, be cautious! Try to stay in Emmett's sight, he can protect you if anything happens."

"And you say I sound like an elder, you sound even more like one!" Clara glanced at the living room and whispered, "Emmett will be looking for me soon, I have to go! Contact me if anything happens."

"Sure."

After hanging up, Clara sighed looking at her phone.

She couldn't have it both ways! And Elio had played the sacrificial role, always making her feel guilty.

"Clara, what are you doing?"

Emmett suddenly appeared at her side, giving her a start!

"Ah! I... I just needed some air! I've been playing with the kids all day, felt a bit stuffy."

"Own up and you'll be let off easy; keep hiding and you'll face the music." Emmett's gaze fell on her phone, "Who was that on the phone?"

Clara nervously bit her lip.

"It was Elio, wasn't it?"

"..."

"Or was it your ex-husband's family?"

Gathering her courage, Clara nodded, "Yes, they said that my son really wants to see me."

"Then bring him over, I'll go with you to see him."
