"I really can't make head or tail of this... His mom never discusses anything with Emmett, and I’ve no clue how she found out about you."
Leah faked a smile, "Well, that's just peachy!"
"But don't sweat it. I’ll try my best to keep you out of this! If all else fails, I'll come clean about who I am."
"No way!" Leah exclaimed immediately after Clara finished her sentence.
Clara was taken aback...
"What I mean is... Elio Milburn is also involved in this. If Emmett finds out not only has Elio been lying to him, but more than once, and he even brought me here to cover up, we'd be in his bad books for good! No more easy street for us! You must keep this under wraps no matter what!"
Clara sighed, "That's been my worry all along. I've tried to feel Emmett out before, and he hates being lied to."
"Yeah... so does anyone really!"
"But we're stuck now! If I knew it'd come to this, I'd never have dragged Elio into this mess..."
Leah took Clara's hand, saying, "I know it sounds selfish, but Elio loves you! He shouldn't get hurt because of your issues with Emmett."
Mentioning Elio, Clara felt a pang of guilt...
"He's been down in the dumps all the time for you, even turning down blind dates arranged by the family. If you let Emmett take revenge on him, my cousin would be crushed!"
Clara pursed her lips, lowering her head.
"You don't know the situation in our family. Most of them don't like Elio, always giving him a hard time! They might even seize this chance to kick him out of the family."
Clara never thought it would be this serious. She was thinking that if push came to shove, she would tell the truth and beg Emmett to let Elio off the hook.
