"Yeah! Absolutely!" Sophia agreed eagerly, nodding her head. "Honey, go give our boy a hand, will you? He can't work with his health like this!"
Emmett sat on the edge of the hospital bed, his thick eyebrows knit together in a frown, as if his parents' words were falling on deaf ears.
Suddenly, he spoke up, his brow furrowed, "What about Clara? You all came to the hospital with me. Doesn't that give her a chance to skip town? No, I need to get back."
Hearing Clara's name, Sophia's tone became frantic and indignant.
"Clara? You're asking about her? Good riddance if she's gone! Look at you, you were always healthy! It's all her fault. If she hadn't cheated and left you heartbroken, how could a strapping guy like you faint?"
After saying this, Sophia also shot Leah a knowing look.
Leah understood what she meant, but it didn't seem right for her to chime in at a time like this.
"Uh, I'll go find a doctor to see why he can't stand up," Leah said awkwardly and quickly left the room.
Sophia frowned but immediately turned to her son. "Look how caring Leah is to you. If you're gonna marry someone, she’s the one. You two already have kids together; you're a perfect match! For the sake of the kids and the Melendez family, cut ties with Clara. Don’t worry about whatever happens to her from now on. Act like you never met her!"
Patrick, who usually stayed out of such matters, even joined in this time, "Emmett, your mother is right. Clara has done the unthinkable; it's time to let go. I heard that you brought her into our home as a maid. At the end of the day, isn't it because you can't let her go? But think about it, are you really getting back at Clara or just hurting yourself by bringing her in?"
Emmett lowered his head; he knew what his father was getting at and that his mother was thinking of the children.
"I can see he's not feeling well, alright? There’s a time and place for everything. Let's go."
Patrick quickly ushered Sophia out of the room, but not before turning back to Emmett with a final word of support, "Get some rest, Emmett. Take care of yourself. No matter what, I've got your back. I just want you to be happy, and for all those with ill intentions to stay away. I may not be as considerate as your mother, but you get my drift."
The door to the hospital room closed.
Emmett clenched his fists so tightly that the veins on the back of his hand stood out.
He understood what his parents were saying; he just didn't want to follow through.
