Newell’s wife wasn't even bothering to pay attention to her husband, as the figure he'd mentioned earlier kept replaying in her mind.
Fifty million dollars!
That was a staggering sum!
If only... if only that money could be hers alone. Then she wouldn't have to kowtow to Newell's whims ever again.
She could give her family back home as much as she pleased...
...
In the hospital room, Emmett was the very picture of intensity, his handsome face set in concentration as he dealt with corporate affairs.
He had wanted to head straight to the office, but Sophia had clung to him, a mess of tears and sniffles, begging him not to leave her side in the hospital.
Left with little choice, Emmett had Ricardo come to the hospital to discuss the new project.
"Any word on the Milburns lately?" Emmett asked once Sophia had left the room.
"No, Elio's practically vanished. Even the hospitals he used to work with can't get a hold of him," Ricardo replied before glancing at Emmett. "Mr. Melendez, do you really... believe there's something between Clara and Elio?"
"Envious of me?"
Emmett's gaze narrowed slightly. His first thought was Leah—every time that woman saw him, she practically quaked in her boots. It was hard to link her with someone who would threaten Clara.
"With your appeal, it's no surprise that many women admire you. That also means there are many who are hostile towards Clara because they believe she's taken their rightful place."
Emmett pursed his lips. "Do you have any proof of what you're saying?"
"Not at the moment, it's just a hunch! Ah, you and Clara were so affectionate before; I hate to see you come to this. And maybe you're just too blinded by love to see reason when faced with her supposed betrayal. But if you just take a step back and look at the situation calmly, you'll see that there are a lot of gaps in this story!"
