Two Times the Charm (Clara and Emmett) novel Chapter 55

Emmett showed up at Clara's place, his presence in the tiny room seeming to shrink the space even more.

"When are you moving to my place?"

"In a few days, I guess!"

"Tomorrow."

Clara frowned, "I need some time to pack! I still have time on my lease here and I've already paid the rent!"

Emmett plopped down on the sofa, picking up a finance book from the coffee table, "You into this stuff?"

"I'm not really into it, I'm just trying to learn something. I mean, how else am I supposed to be a good secretary if I don't know anything?"

Emmett smirked and responded, "If you're interested in finance, I could teach you myself." Clara quickly declined, "No, no! I can manage on my own! I wouldn't want to waste your time!" Emmett insisted, "You're my wife, I should be doing this."

He suddenly got up and headed for the bathroom, and Clara hurriedly followed. She felt anxious, fearing he might find traces of Alex that she hadn’t yet managed to erase.

After all, Emmett's visit was out of the blue! She was totally unprepared! Trying to change the subject, Emmett asked, "Do you live here alone?"

Clara nodded and replied, "Yeah!" Emmett continued, "Don't you have a son?"

Clara's face saddened as she responded, "He was taken away by my ex-husband's family."

Hearing her mention her ex, Emmett frowned and said, "We should bring your son back at some point. I'd like to meet him."

"Oh... okay..." Clara could only nod reluctantly.

This was proving to be a real ordeal for her.

Every second with Emmett felt like a scene out of a disaster movie!

"Let's eat." After a quick once-over of the place, satisfied that Clara was indeed living alone, he relaxed, "I'll have Ricardo help you move tomorrow."

"Alright..." Clara agreed, thinking she'd be closer to her son, she nodded.

But she'd have to be extra careful when video chatting with Alex from now on!

She dumped the contents of her shopping bag onto plates in the kitchen.

Clara watched his brow furrow!

"You enjoy eating this?"

Clara nodded vigorously, "Yeah! Don't you like it?"

"...You find this tasty?"

"Yes! It's absolutely delicious!"

Emmett put down his fork and stood up, "Then enjoy, I'm off to bed."

"You're leaving?" Clara hurriedly stood up, "I'll walk you out!"

Emmett said, "It's late, I'll just sleep here."

"What... sleep here?!"

"What's wrong?" Emmett looked at her as if this was the most natural thing in the world.
